“Very comfortable hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

We spent 3 nights here and thought it was very good. Our room was a good size, clean and well appointed. The location is great, a few minutes walk from the Metro station and only 3 stops away from Kyoto main station. There are so many restaurants within walking distance that it was difficult to choose which one to eat at but its fair to say that we did not have a bad meal anywhere in Japan. Starbucks is 2 minutes walk down the road and we had breakfast there each day. It was nice to get a big coffee before we started visiting the many wonderful temples and gardens.
The staff at the hotel were very helpful. We bought a 2 day Metro Pass at the hotel which made travelling around the city very easy. We also bought stamps for postcards which they posted for us. On our one rainy day they loaned us umbrellas.
We plan to return to Kyoto next year and will probably book this hotel again.

Room Tip: We had a room on the 6th floor. It was spacious and quiet.

We spent four nights here and generally enjoyed our stay. I got sick during our trip to Kyoto, so I had to stay in for two days and am glad that the hotel room was clean and comfortable. The location of the hotel is also very good; it's within walking distance to Gion and Nishiki Market; the Arts and Crafts Museum and the Manga Museum are also nearby.

Can't say anything bad about this hotel, except that it was supposed to have a temperpedic mattress which is actually why I chose it. I talked to them and they offered me a discount. Very convenient location-across the street is subway entrance and there were taxis readilly available any time. Not a bad walk to the Royal Palace or even to the train station if the weather is nice. Also a great little place to eat on the corner up the hill.

great location - can take the subway train here from kyoto station.
staff very nice.

we got breakfast at mcdonalds just down the road ( turn right outside the hotel and just keep walking until you find it ). starbucks over the road.

rooms quite small, but cozy. (but if you are a of large build you may find it a bit of a squeeze)
decor very pretty, especially the bathrooms!

we tried the french restaurant on site, which was lovely - great service and food in a lovely setting.

there is also a great barbecue place to eat (Grill your own steak!) round the corner called Kikyo (turn left out of the hotel, next left, then it's a little way down on your right opposite a cheesecake shop).

convenient to walk to shops and fish market - ask reception for a map.

reception also loaned us umbrellas!

smoking rooms:
small room (like a broom cupboard size!) on ground floor near toilets.
much larger one on same floor as restaurants - but can only use this when restaurants open as the lifts don't stop on this floor otherwise.

would recommend - we had a lovely stay here.

Pros:
• Truly excellent Spa &Sauna. Strict no Tattoo policy though.
• Beautiful décor. A bit too Rococco modern for me but impressive overall.
• A full-size bathtub

Cons:
• They’re a trendy Japanese boutique hotel and I felt that the attitude that goes with this type of hotel occasionally comes across in condescending interaction with their guests. I found that to be the case when we spent a week here last November
• Typical room size for most small hotels in Japan.

ProTips
• Try the breakfast once but unless it’s mediocrity just blows your socks off head on over to the market for a morning miso, fried lotus root and dried fish.
• At the concierge’s desk: Try to look well-heeled and important; baring that go for shabby-rich and wing it.
`
We moved from another hotel where we had been for 9 days to the Monterrey Kyoto which was around the corner. We moved mostly for a change of scenery but ended up wishing we hadn’t. The décor is fairly grand and the facilities are befitting of a boutique hotel. The rooms however are fairly typical size for a Japanese hotel maybe even a bit smaller. I would recommend this place for travelling couples and/or singles but they’re not used to/ equipped to deal with families.

Very nice new hotel in the heart of Kyoto. It seems to be on the main shopping street and in front of one of the main temples. The hotel is rather retro as far as the design is concerned.the rooms are standard Japanese standard and somewhat small but the bed is very comfortable. Ac-heater did not have instructions in English so I could not figure it out. The staff could all speak English and the breakfast was ok as well. I paid around $100 for the night and I thought it was very cheap compared to Japanese standards.

Lovely boutique hotel, very trendy lobby & comfortable room.
Perfect central location to base yourself in Kyoto.
Exceptional & polite japanese service as always.
Room may be small for some, but cosy for us.
Only issue was trying to figure out how to use the a/c which only had japanese instructions!
Tip - Go to the local starbucks (heading downtown) and enjoy the amazing temple as you sip on your morning coffee!
I would certainly stay here again. Kyoto is a beautiful and magnificent city.
