I loved staying at the Hyatt Regency in Kyoto. I was deciding whether or not to stay in a smaller ryokan (traditional guest house) or a boutique hotel and in the end I decided I would stay in a large hotel. I'm actually really glad that I did - we spent most of our days looking at temples and shrines and visiting tiny little restaurants and historic streets, so we really weren't missing out on any culture by staying at the Hyatt, and it was great to have such a comfortable room to come back to. The Hyatt Regency is also thoroughly Japanese - the architect and designers did an amazing job, with beautiful use of lighting and traditional Japanese design. I loved how the bedheads in the room were made of Kimono material - stunning. This hotel certainly had a great ambience.
The breakfast was also worthy of note - huge selection and really delicious.
Really happy with our choice in staying at the Hyatt!
A tip for Kyoto - eat in as many restaurants as you can in Pontocho - delicious! And definitely, definitely do a kaiseki dinner at the Shiraume Ryokan if you can - it's expensive but my oh my is it worth it!!!
