“Perfect Location at Reasonable Price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2012

This hotel is situated just about 100m from Kyoto Train Station South Gate. It is very near also to Avanti (Shopping center).
The rooms we had were twins and the size was very good. The bathroom was much bigger than average Japanese type. Beds were comfortable and the room temperature control was good. Sound proofing was also excellent as it managed to filter out sound from train station and streets.
Checking in and out was brief.
Internet speed was good, for Wifi, need to get a router from front desk.
Staff's attitude was excellent. They were extremely helpful on availing travel advise.
Didn't have chance to try out breakfast, but it was a bit pricy (@1380yen).
All in all, a good hotel to stay due to its location, room quality, friendliness, and value.

Room Tip: Twin rooms are spacious!

“Excellent location, excellent Japanese restaurant, super-clean, great stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2011

On a stopover to another Japanese city. Cherry blossom season is lovely in this old historic city. Hotel will only provide room after the stipulated check-in time. Room size is great for Japanese standard, hotel is well maintained and excellent Housekeeping team. 10 minutes walk to Kyoto Central station, well connected to many parts of Kyoto city. The Japanese restaurant on lobby level serving Kyoto flare is excellent and value for money in lovely setting overlooking a quiet Japanese style garden!

“great location, great value, very clean, hard beds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2010

our group used 5 rooms, all were very clean . Staff was helpful. As in all other hotels on this trip to Japan, the beds were very hard-location near train station very convenient for Kyoto.
Be aware that this hotel is not able to exchange foreign money, but they will direct you to Isetan department store, where it is possible to exchange money,Monday to Friday 11AM-5pm. the breakfast is good if you like a Japanese breakfast, limited if you prefer western style breakfast. I consider this a great find for budget minded travelers, as well as those who were unable to find more upscale lodging during one of the busiest weekends in Kyoto!

“You have to pay extra if you want a room without bed bugs”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2010

There are no other reviews in English because very few foreigners seem to stay here. The lobby staff does speak enough English, however, and for the most part, it is a pretty nice hotel, though the wired, in-room, complimentary internet service was spotty.

The negative review is due to one thing only: how the staff handled our bed bug complaint. We travel a lot...all over the world, and we've experienced bed bugs in more than one establishment. They are a fact of life...so what distinguishes a good review from a bad one is how the establishment handles the complaint. And at the Hotel Centnovum, we thought the way they handled things was just tacky.

The first morning there, we tried to attribute the bites to mosquitoes...there are tons in Kyoto this time of year. But the second morning, we had more bites AND there were blood spots on the sheets and pillowcase (tell tale bed bug signs). So I tore apart the bed and found a dead or alive (didn’t try to find out) bed bug in the seam of the mattress. I told my husband we weren’t staying in that room.

He went down to the lobby to tell them we wanted to move while I showered and packed up our stuff. When I came down to check on things, my husband told me that we could move, but since there were no more rooms of the class we had booked, we would have to pay more for a more expensive room. Excuse me? We were getting bitten in our room, but because only more expensive rooms were available, our choice was to stay and keep getting bitten and increase the chance of bringing the bugs home with us, or pay more to move. TACKY.

We could have moved to another hotel, true, but the people we were visiting had made the hotel arrangements and it would have been awkward to have to explain to them why we were moving. So…we decided to suck it up. The hotel ended up cutting us a deal, and didn’t make us pay the full rate increase. Still….we had to pay more for the privilege of moving to a room without bed bugs….which…we never would have tolerated in a place where we had a better grasp of the language and culture.

I was left with a quite negative opinion of the place.
