We had originally booked another hotel but a few days before arriving, decided we wanted to stay a little closer to the station.
When arriving at the JR station, information told us how to get to the hotel, which was only one subway station away.
The front desk spoke broken English but we were checked in rather quickly.
The room, now what can I say. It smelt of smoke even though it was a non smoking floor. The room, although clean, had stains on the carpet and also on the bedspread. The beds were very hard, too hard really. Only one pillow each and when we asked for more, they didnt come until I called down again. They had gotten our room number wrong. Also, the second night they called to say our pizza had arrived and we hadnt ordered pizza. Again they obviously got the room numbers wrong.
There aren’t many places to eat in the area although there is a small Japanese place just over the other side of the road, a few doors up from McDonalds which had the best Japanese meal we had in 18 days for a cheap price. We went back the following day too. Above the JR station there is plenty of eating places and it is only 20 minutes walk from the hotel
The map of Kyoto gives you the wrong impression of the size. Kyoto is huge and when you think something is only a short walk turns out to be very far. Make use of the subway, JR line and buses to get around.
