“Excellent, A+”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2012

We stayed at the Westin for 5 nights in the hottest month of the year, August. Kyoto was amazing with all of the wonderful temples and sights and food! What made this trip extra special was how excellent the stay was at the Westin hotel.

I cannot give one single complaint about this hotel, and if you’ve read any of my previous reviews…I’m a huge complainer! I will point out the tiniest flaw and there was not one flaw at this hotel.

We are SPG Platinum members and had access to the free breakfast on the 2nd floor or in the Executive lounge. While the lounge has far fewer food options, we opted to eat here every morning because of the gorgeous view of Kyoto. It was also 100X quieter (not a million kids running around) than the 2nd floor restaurant.

The Concierge helped me out every single day with my itinerary. The ladies there would take their time in mapping out how to get to each temple or site via the subway and buses. They never steered me wrong.

The subway is right around the corner and the Westin’s free shuttle saves you a lot of time and efforts for when we want to get into Pontocho or Gion for dinner. The hotel is also on the best side of Kyoto where a lot of temples and gardens are located. The Philosopher’s Walk is just a short distance away.

Also a quick tip regarding Bike Rentals, don’t rent bikes from the hotel. 2,000 yen is ridiculous and you need to return it by 5pm. I searched every forum regarding renting bikes and not one told me about the Kiosk Bike Rental at the Sanjo Keihan (first shuttle drop off, near the train entrance) Train Station. It is 1,000 yen for 24 hours. Much, much better option. You just put in your Credit Card and Wala! The bike pops out of the rack. (make sure your tires are fully inflated before you choose your bike!)

About our room. We were put up in the Suite which had two rooms, a sitting room and a bedroom. The Sheraton’s signature heavenly beds were just that…heavenly. I got the best night’s sleep each night. The room was totally quiet and the blackout curtains helped us to sleep in until the late morning. The staff always kept the room totally clean and we would have little snacks waiting for us each night upon our return. I also loved the Bidet… I wish we had one in our house!

About the Wifi… HARDLY ANYWHERE IN JAPAN HAS HAVE WIFI!!! This is just how Japan works, it’s weird, but it’s not offered. I usually deduct points for hotels that do not have wifi, but the Westin DOES HAVE WIFI. Wifi in the lobby and lounges, which is good enough for me! No, the rooms do not have a wifi connection, but I would recommend that if you really need wifi, you buy a wifi adapter to plug into the portal if you are only travelling with an iphone/ipad. It worked brilliantly for us.

Overall, this hotel was the "icing on the cake" for our amazing trip to Kyoto. I would recommend it for families, friends, business travellers, singles and couples.

I am a Platinum SPG member and have stayed at quite a lot of Westin Hotels. This one is not up to scratch.
First up, no Wi-fi at all in your room. You have to go to the Lobby or, if you are lucky enough, the Executive Lounge for this. If you are traveling with an iPad or smart phone only, this is a nightmare.
The Japanese style rooms are dated and do not allow for a good nights sleep. We were woken at 5.30am by the sun as there are only thin paper blinds.
We changed to a Junior Suite for the rest of our stay and this was great.
The staff were lovely and the Concierge had some great restaurant advice for us.
Overall, the place is ok, but not up to the standard expected at a Westin.

I recently spent 2 nights in the Westin Miyako and overall was quite pleased. The location is great (literally around the corner from a subway stop, and walking distance to several significant sights) and the lobby is gorgeous. Our room and bathroom were clean and quietly stylish. The staff speaks nearly-impeccable English, and went out of their way to be helpful & friendly, even solving a reservation error that could have been disastrous. The free shuttle to & from Kyoto station is very handy, if starting mysteriously late in the morning (8am, seriously? don't people need to catch trains before then?)

The reason I can't give 5 stars are 1) no Wi-Fi in the rooms and 2) 500yen to use the swimming pool?? For the amount you pay for a room, you'd think the pool would be gratis...

That said, I would certainly stay here again in a heartbeat, and would recommend to friends.

We stayed at The Westin Miyako for five days, and we liked it a lot. It has a great location, nice views over the city, a peaceful atmosphere, and good service. It is not exciting or special, but efficient, clean, friendly - and not to far from the city. The rooms were huge - and nice to be in.

I would stay there again.

I have stayed in a few Westin around the globe and this one needs some TLC. I always have an image of superior quality, but was let down here. No WiFi in the rooms and the business centre was not accessible all hours.

The rooms were clean and OK, but looking old and tired.

Warning.... we ate at the Teppanyaki restaurant in the hotel and got fleeced for a bill of over $500 and walked away hungry.

Room was large and bright. Fantastic buffet breakfast was included in our room (but maybe not all). Free swimming pool which was unusual in Japan. Free shuttle ever 30 minutes to the Kyoto subway station, with 2 other stops at shopping areas. Great location for walks.

I stayed here for a conference and the experience was not too bad.

This is a hotel with history so the rooms are pretty small and the renovation is needed. If you fancy modern hotels, Granvia is a better choice. This Westin does not have the signature “Heavenly Bed” or comfortable pillows. However, the service is pretty okay (especially the front desk staff who are very attentive and speak great English). But to be honest, service in Japan is rarely a problem.

The location is quite good. It’s very comfortable to walk to Kamogawa (restaurant and bar areas alongside Kamo River) and to Gion (shopping and restaurant streets) and it only took about 15 to 20 minutes.

There are also a couple of restaurants and convenience stores on the same street of the hotel. If you do not want to dine in the hotel, 500 Yen (USD 6.5) can get you a decent bowl of noodles at a noddle shop next to the hotel. For those who don’t speak any Japanese, most of the dining places prepare menus in English so it’s not a problem at all.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back are quieter.
