We stayed in Kyoto Century Hotel for seven nights during our recent trip to Kyoto. The hotel is next to the Kyoto Station. After walking out the station through the north exit and turning right, you will see the hotel.
The size of the room is decent. Furniture and décor are a bit old. The beds are comfortable for a good sleep. Being next to the station, noise can be an issue. Our room at 9th floor faced the tracks, but noise was not much a problem. The soundproofing of the room was quite good as we could not hear bullet trains and most local trains when they passed by. Occasionally some local trains did generate noise, but it was bearable. Light sleepers may want to request for rooms facing the Shiokoji Dori. To use the internet, we had to borrow a modem set from the reception desk (free of charge). The TV does not have any English program channels.
The staff members were polite and helpful. They greeted us whenever we left or returned to the hotel. One evening we urgently needed a lip cream for cold sore which was not available at a pharmacy in the underground mall of the station. We asked a hotel staff for help. She made a number of calls and found a nearby pharmacy (a 10-minute walk) which sold the cream. The pharmacy closed at midnight and our problem was solved.
The entrance to the nearest subway station is just 100 meters away from the hotel. Further to the east by another 100 meters brings you to the bus terminal. Most attractions in Kyoto can be reached by bus and/or subway. It is therefore a good idea to buy a bus/subway pass to save you the trouble of buying tickets for every trip. Three types of passes are available: 1- and 2-day sightseeing passes for both bus and subway (1200 yen and 2000 yen, respectively), 1-day bus pass for 500 yen, and 1-day subway pass for 600 yen. The passes are available from the hotel.
There are many shops and restaurants in the Kyoto Station and the underground mall. Moreover, a major department store Isetan is right in the station. We are glad to have chosen Kyoto Century Hotel.
