So, I settled on Ohto after an extensive search for a cheaper ryokan with a private bath in Kyoto. Many of the other ryokans I looked into were booked, so I ended up with Ohto.
I wish I hadn’t. The first thing I noticed as I walked in was that it smelled like cigarettes. Which for me, is a HUGE turn off. The place was dark and poorly lit. The landlady doesn’t speak good English, but just enough to get by.
Our room was small, which is fine by me, I expected that, but it wasn’t as clean as I would have liked. The room smelled of dirty socks. The bedding didn’t seem to be all that clean. In fact, I initially thought that the bedding had the futon mats, sheets, and a comforter, but there was actually just mats and sheets. There were 2 of us in the room and about 5 mats and 2 sheets. Sounds like a lot, but the mats are actually extremely thin, so you need at least 3 of them to feel like you aren’t sleeping on the floor. And since I was there in February/early March and it was still very cold outside, I thought they would have more to cover you than a sheet. Nope. I had to use a mat as my covers. Since I felt the bedding was dirty, I slept in socks, slippers, sleep pants, tank top, and sweatshirt. That still didn’t save me. After the 2nd night there I noticed a rash forming on my neck. It was red, bumpy, and itchy and looked like bites. Soon after, it started forming on my arms. Now, I don’t know what it is, (the doctor was in conclusive) but I am pretty sure that I got the rash/bites from Ohto.
One other thing that I didn’t like is that when you leave your room you have to leave your key in a box at the front desk. In a box with everyone else’s keys. So anyone could waltz in, grab your key and go into your room. Not very secure at all. I didn’t feel my belongings were safe. I know crime is low in Japan, but I don’t trust other tourists!
Overall I felt that Ohto was dark, dirty, and icky. I wouldn’t recommend it at all.
