“Location, comfort, and value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2012

The Hearton Hotel in Kyoto is a well-known tourist and business hotel, and a favorite with tour groups of Japanese school kids. This makes for a somewhat chaotic scene in the lobby, but even so, our four-night stay was a great experience.

The rooms are small, as they are in most Japanese hotels, but still about the size of the guest room in our house. Comfortable bed, sensational plumbing, and excellent service. I wish the front desk people spoke better English, but they were unfailingly polite and extremely helpful.

You can’t beat the location, either. The hotel is three subway stops north of the main train terminal, and the subway station is almost right outside the door. It’s a few blocks from a huge covered shopping area, and another very trendy shopping center located in an old school building. There are convenience stores and restaurants galore, all within a 5 to 10-minute walk.

The breakfast buffet (not included in the room rate) is reasonable, and offers a complete selection of both Western and Japanese items. Overall, a great value and excellent hotel experience.

A standard business hotel with lots of tour groups and older French couples, but the rooms were nice enough, the breakfast was awesome and it had everything you could ask for including free rental bikes.
Close enough to walk to nijo castle and the town centre.
If it had a nice lounge area (instead of everyone using the wifi on some chairs in the lobby) I would have considered even giving it 5!

Spent 5 nights in a very small room for a couple! I just like the free wifi I was in touch with my children. No doubt its clean, the room may be too small for us, the toilet is fine.We like the hotel but its really the size of the room thats giving us second thoughts to book there again. The staffs are very friendly and helpful.

We recently used the Hearton as a base for site-seeing in Kyoto. The proximity to the train station is very convenient. Although tucked off the beaten path it is only about a block walk from the train and appears to be quite popular as a business class hotel. The service was very good and a large variety of foods is offered in the breakfast buffet (included in the rate) offering western and traditional choices. The rooms are small, but clean and the bathroom is surprisingly large! Staff are very helpful and offer umbrellas to borrow for guests. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Great location for the nearby markets and shopping - only a 15 minute walk.

Spent 5 nights here -- room was smaller than other rooms we've stayed in around Japan but very nice for the price. Centrally located & a decent breakfast included. Free bike rentals make getting over to Nishki market a snap. Would absolutely stay here again.

The Hearton Hotel is conveniently located, moderately priced, and very comfortable. Although our room was small, it was well equipped and comfortable. The staff is very helpful. The breakfast buffet is excellent and a bargain. We stayed five nights and were very happy with the hotel.

We stayed at Hearton Hotel Kyoto for the first time. I must first qualify my comments by saying that hotels in Kyoto are, in general, overpriced, and the hotel owners are, in general, not that eager for business. Given that, it was hard to find a hotel that is conveniently located, reasonably priced, and nicely appointed. We felt that the location was fairly good, being almost at the geometric center of the city. The hotel was very close to the Karasuma Oike subway station, which is the intersection of the East-West Line and the Karasuma Line. Subway trip from the JR Kyoto Station was very short. The hotel is medium walking distance or just one subway stop Nijo Castle and Imperial Palace. The subway can take you to a lot of other sights as well. The Shijo shopping area is either one subway ride or a ten minute walk. I don't understand why a previous reviewer thought the hotel is far from the center of the city. Anyways, there are a lot of dining options nearby...there is no need to eat at the traditional restaurant in the hotel. We did not eat there, but we thought the prices were a little high. If you want to spend that much for dinner, there are literally dozens of other well known options nearby. The room was small and rather uninspired. It was clean, but smelled a bit musty and smoky, especially in the hallways. We thought the rates were reasonable only in Kyoto...otherwise a bit overpriced if this property were to be in other cities in Japan. However we thought this was a good option for getting around the city using the subway. If you want to stay in a Kyoto hotel with nicer rooms, be prepared to pay more.
