“Unique japanese market”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

Nice food variety from sweets to savory. I'll put it at that. Worth going not only for the culinary experience, the visual and shopping time is excellent too.

“Lots of food stalls but make sure you stop at Aritsuga, the best knife shop in the world!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2013

Depending on the time of day Nishiki Market can be very crowded. It is an amazing place to eat, to become acquainted with the myriad of ingredients for Japanese cooking and a great place to take photographs. Do not miss the Aritsuga traditional knife store. Every time I am in Kyoto I buy another knife. They sharpen it and put your name in Japanese (and English). The paring knifes are wonderful. The last time I also bought a small steel tempura pan. It is great for when you get home to cook fries! (or tempura). Something about the slope of the pan and the metal makes everything crisp. These knives - which are purchases for a lifetime - they have been making them for more than a thousand years - can be sharpened in Calgary if you are from Canada. Or get a stone and try and do it yourself. Other shops are in the market selling Hello Kitty paraphenalia as well as some lovely textiles.

“Foodie haven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

Nicknamed Kyoto's Kitchen, Nishiki Market has been in business for about 400 years old. Along this narrow lane that spans 5 blocks is where Kyoto food specialties and snacks can be found. This place is not just meant for tourists; locals shop here too and the market is especially busy on days leading up to the New Year as the Japanese complete their last minute shopping to prepare for the holiday feast. Nishiki Market sets an example of how one can learn about a culture through their food.

“A wonderful array of Japanese foodstuff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2013

It's great to be here and shop around for Japanese foodstuff. There are lots on offer. All sorts of fresh and dried seafood, fried and grilled meats, snacks, fresh fruits and vegetables, unusual pickled vegetables, shops selling green tea, soy products, layer cake and many others.

There is a shrine at the end of the market, where it joins with Teramachi shopping arcade. Nishiki market is a a short walk from Shijo subway station and Karasuma station.

“You have got to go”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2013

This is an amazing place. Probably a kilometre of covered market with the most diverse incredible food on display and for sale. Difficult to know what most of it is but great photo opportunity. Had the very best strawberries ever from here!
