“Good value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

I stayed in the Palace Side Hotel for almost a week to attend a conference, followed by some sightseeing around Kyoto (I had seen most of Kyoto already during my first visit). The room was clean, and although small (for Western standards, for Japanese standards it was probably above average) big enough to be comfortable. The hotel has free internet (wifi only in lobby), a restaurant with decent prized meals and the staff spoke adequate English. You can get a Y 100 discount on the good breakfast buffet if you buy your ticket the day before.

Although the hotel is next to the Imperial Palace, it is not close to most major sights inside Kyoto (which didn't matter to me as I already seen those). There are also not many restaurants on walking distance. However, it is within 5 min. walking of the subway, which was very convenient for me. Close to the subway station is also a 7/11 with an ATM, in case you run out of cash.

“Fine, but you can probably do better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2012

Nice modern reception area, with free wifi. Shame the rooms hadn’t been maintained to the same standard: ours was distinctly outdated, and a more than a little tired, in terms of both decor and furnishings.

The location was okay - not far from the subway. We walked to the centre quite happily in the evenings, but it’s not close, and we’re probably more inclined to walk than the average hotel guest. That it’s next to the Imperial Palace isn’t really much use for anything - most of the sights are on the other side of the city.

It was the best option we could find on a public holiday weekend, and there’s probably a reason that it was available. It was fine, but I’m sure in other circumstances you could do better.

“Beautiful hotel and palace garden nearby”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

What a wonderful hotel. Have stayed there on two trips and loved it. Once a daughter was with me and she sleeps in so I strolled all over the palace gardens across the street. The pictures I took were spectacular. The dining area is nice, the lighted sitting area outside, beautiful. Once there was music in the entryway where a piano sits. The staff is helpful and always there. Top notch!

Room Tip: Can take a bus or taxi to the shopping area of Kyoto but this hotel was convenient to one Kyoto stat...

“Very good deal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2012

Same principe as the Garden Palace Hotel, which is next door, but a bit cheaper.
Very clean also, perfect location and possibility to rent bike for the day.
We didn't try the breakfast though, but the buffet seemed quite all right!
I would totally recommend it!

“Small basic rooms but lovely location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2012

If you don't mind a small (make that VERY small) room with almost spartan furnishings, this is a wonderful hotel. The lobby area is spacious and comfortable for gatherings of groups before touring, and the hotel restaurant has a tasty, basic breakfast buffet which makes a good start to a day of touring in Kyoto. Sound proofing between the rooms is minimal and the bathroom in your room is a typical Japanese airport hotel bathroom -- a stand-alone, step-into piece containing the toilet sink and shower. It's a little unusual for western tastes, but it is functional. The price is so reasonable it might be worth an upgrade to a larger room. There is a laundry onsite and a basic shared kitchen space. With such great food available in all the department stores, I made use of the kitchen a couple of times. It is also a nice place to sit and eat with friends. Wireless is available and free on the first two floors only so I had to carry my Ipad to the lobby to use it. There are two computers in the lobby for guest-use if you don't have your own.

This is not the luxury choice but it has a very nice location across from the park and within walking distance of the subway and shops. Not a lot of restaurants close by but there are a few and cabs are easy.

Big plus is the English-speaking staff at the front desk. They are very very helpful and friendly (as is everyone in Kyoto). I sent a box of gifts ahead of my arrival and they emailed me to say they were received, they arranged taxis and they forwarded my luggage to my hotel in Tokyo for me so I didn't have to lug them on the Shinkansen (bullet train). Perfect.

It's a nice quiet location except for the hospital/police station (?) a couple of blocks away. Even with the windows closed I woke up to the sirens a few times.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a larger room if you can.
