“A good place to have a walk”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

It's a beautiful place when you can enjoy all the marvellous colors of the nature. But you have to pay a fee to enter. And it's not the most beautiful site in Kyoto.
Fushimi Inari is more interesting.

“beautiful gardens”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2013

The gardens, although not all that large, have several areas with very different plantings and styles, all of them beautiful and interesting. Go out the back exit into the Bamboo forest.

“A beautiful Zen temple”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

Tofukuji temple is 10 minutes walk from Tofukuji station (JR and Keihan) and it is simply beautiful. Past the 400 yen entrance is the Tsutenkyo bridge, a structure made of wood. The view of the lush green maple trees below the bridge is lovely in spring and I imagine would look spectacular in autumn. The gardens around the temple appear to be extremely well taken care of.

Followed the sound of chanting and stepped into Kaisando hall. There was a ceremony going on with monks chanting and a sizeable number of worshippers participating. There were two different gardens to the left and right of the path leading to the hall. One was gravel in checkerboard pattern and the other had a pond surrounded by plants. Admired the gardens and observed the ceremony.

Wanted to visit the Hojo to see the rock garden but it was apparently closed on that day. Nevertheless, the towering sanmon gate was indeed impressive and saw some stone torii gates along the way, which seemed odd for a Buddhist temple. Left the complex with a better appreciation of zen.

“Easily the best temple in Kyoto”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2013

We visited Tofuku ji late in the day and how we've regretted that decision. If there is a japanese Buddhist temple that exemplifies "Zen-ness" and natural beauty - this temple could easily be number 1. On approaching the temple, you will catch a glimpse of the Tsutenkyoi "sky bridge" which is a thing of beauty in itself. Accessing the bridge is within the paid area. The view from the bridge is also spectacular especially in autumn. The Hojo and Kaisando Hall are the other paid areas WORTH GOING due to the beauty of the rock gardens. This temple doesn't seem to get many tourists and schoolchildren hoards unlike the other places in Kyoto so it is nice and peaceful to visit. We got there at 1430hrs and didn't have time to visit the oldest sanmon gate in Japan - as the temple closes at 1630 hrs.

“beautiful temple and garden”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2013

We went there today for the monthly flea market which is on the 21st of every month. If you are in kyoto then , do all your shopping there. There are wonderful non tacky things to buy for not much money . The Japanese have a wonderful sense of style and design and its eveywhere evident in the clothes, ceramics, jewelry being sold by crafts people here. Then when you're done shopping, a stroll through the temple garden and through the famous pagoda reminds you of the beauty of the less material aspects of life.
