“Oasis for Kyoto visitors”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2014 for a stay in December 2013

We wanted to spend a month in Kyoto, to visit the tourist sites, but also get a brief feel for everyday life in Kyoto. From previous short and longer visits to Japan, using a wide variety of traditional and modern accommodations, we wanted conveniently located roomy accommodation blending western and Japanese amenities. Hidden Inn was the perfect choice and you simply couldn't ask for a friendlier or more helpful owner to make your stay easier and more comfortable. Kyoto is best seen by walking and local transportation. Hidden Inn is nicely located near the river within walking distance (5-30 minutes), or short subway rides, to Kyoto train station, restaurants, grocery and department store shopping, and many of the local shrines and temples. All of these can be easily located using the owner's excellent and detailed web site, and the maps and books kept for guests at Hidden Inn. Hidden Inn is spacious for Japan and well equipped for western visitors (high speed internet, washer-dryer, A/C, TV, travel info, stove, fridge, shower & tub etc.) for short or long term stays during any season. We would highly recommend Hidden Inn, with any reservations (no pun intended), to visitors who want to get a feel for old and new Kyoto. Hidden Inn is quietly nestled in a traditional Japanese neighborhood for an authentic experience of the life and customs that make Kyoto, and the friendly people of Kyoto, such a wonderful experience.

“Good for group of 4 to 6”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2013 for a stay in October 2013

I have stayed in this place for 4 days. It is hassle free and pretty much easy from booking to finding the place and checking out. I am traveling in a group of 3 adults and 1 toddler. Washing machine for laundry, kitchen serves very practical purpose so staying in a house is a plus. in the four days I stayed, I felt like I have a piece of experience of what it feels like to stay in Kyoto as a local. As my schedule was quite busy in the 4 days, I did not meet up with the owner at all. Nevertheless, that did not stop the owner from posting emails to ask about me and my family and provide some suggestions on my queries. All in all, I recommend this for traveling group for 4 to 6 people as the value for money per person is better.

“A great way to experience Kyoto”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013 for a stay in September 2013

Hidden Inn is a pleasure to return to after a busy day's sightseeing and shopping in Kyoto. Staying in a well equipped house like this made our travels very comfortable. It is presented to a high standard and being able to cook and do laundry was much appreciated. Kyoto is a lovely city and staying at Hidden Inn suited us very much.

“Hidden Inn was immaculate, well-appointed, conveniently located, and compact.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2013 for a stay in July 2013

I stayed with family at the Hidden Inn for three nights in July 2013. Keith, the manager, was a pleasure to work with, and made us feel welcome in this lovely but small town home in Kyoto. When we arrived in the evening, there were some snacks and beverages to tide us over for the first night. He had two organized notebooks: one with information about the house; the other with information about local restaurants, shops and attractions. There were also several guide books on travel within Kyoto.

The house itself was immaculate. We should be such good house keepers! It was well stocked with dishes, pots, etc. it was, however, quite compact, and smaller than I anticipated from the pictures. However, the layout was good, and incorporated a number of clever space-saving storage techniques.

We were six: my wife and me, our two teenage kids, and our young adult son and his girlfriend. The ad for the Hidden Inn says the maximum capacity is six, and I agree. But six is tight. There is a nice king-sized bed in one bedroom upstairs, and two singles (one of which pulls out) in a trundle bed in a second space attached to the first bedroom. That space has little room beyond the space for the bed and dresser. Although there are sliding doors that offer privacy from the main bedroom, you have to walk through the bedroom to access that space. This arrangement would be perfect for young kids, but it is less ideal for adults unless they are easy going and dont require a lot of privacy. There is also a small balcony off of the bedroom, which is a lovely place to sit and read or just absorb the feel of this Kyoto residential community. The stairs up to the bedroom are quite steep, narrow, and require care, particularly in sock feet.

Downstairs the couch in the small living/family room next to the kitchen has a full pullout bed in it. This worked well for us. Beware, however, that anyone sleeping in the downstairs pull-out bed will be right in the thick of any action in the kitchen, given the compact nature of the house.

The house was located about a 12 minute walk to the subway station, and there were several restaurants, shrines, museums, and shops within a few minute walk.

All in all, the Hidden Inn was a great place for our group, and I recommend it to others without hesitation. I think it would work particularly well for a family of four.

Management Response
Aug 1, 2013
Thanks Joe for taking the time to post a review. It was a pleasure to have you. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Just to clarify, the station closest to Hidden Inn is Keihan Kiyomizu Gojo underground and is 600m away. It takes 5 or 6 minutes to walk there, not 12.

“Great place to stay, excellent location to explore Kyoto from”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2013 for a stay in May 2013

We stayed at the Hidden Inn after reviewing multiple options to stay in Kyoto. The fact that we would be centrally located, have the option to cook, do laundry and sit outside, as well as the reviews written convinced us to book the Hidden Inn for 3 nights: It didn't disappoint.
It is a short taxi ride from Kyoto station, about $12, and after that a short walk. Despite the directions we had some trouble finding the place but thanks to a helpful passerby and the postman, we were quickly brought to the house. The taxi may drop you off at the point where the street turns into a one way road and not be able to direct you further. No problem, walk straight ahead into the now narrow one way street, pass the sweet shop and coke machine on the left after 40 yards and take an immediate left at the utility pole, into the alley way. At the end, take a left and the door is immediately on the right. In case dropped of in front of the temple, stand with your back to the temple, go to your right till the end of the two way street (about 100 yards) and then follow as above.
The place itself is cosy, has everything you need, fully equipped kitchen with supplies (kindly replenish what you use/finish), which is very handy, no need to run to the grocery store immediately. Stores, restaurants are within walking distance as described in the handy folder supplied. The Post Office is at the end of the street, good for changing money. There is a huge tv which we did not use with easy hookup to i-pods and what not. The shower is great, and the washer/dryer combo a fabulous feature. Tip: if you want to use the dryer function do that at night or start a load before you go explore, it takes a while. The dryer rack may be easier.
We used the comfortable bed in the upstairs bedroom with adjoining small deck, great for morning coffee or afternoon drinks. The house sleeps officially 6 but depending on your level of activity and group constellation that may be a bit cramped; best for a family of 6.
For exploring, take a left out of the alley way, keep going straight and in 15 minutes you are in the heart of Gion, very easy and a nice walk. The Hyatt is a 10 minute walk, and has good restaurants (we tried the Japanese) but there are many other options, often less expensive and even better quality. When leaving, walk back to where you were dropped off. There is always a taxi waiting. if the driver naps, wake him/her up.
