“Best ramen in Kyoto”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

If you like Ramen then head for Ippodo near Nishiki market. If you are in the market, where the fish stalls are, head for the outside and keep going till the "T" junction at the end of the road. Best Ramen in Kyoto.

“Tasty but better Ramen down the road. This felt like a fast-food chain.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

My husband and I had read all the great review of this place on Tripadvisor and made a visit to the restaurant beginning of May 2013.

The food is good, but it is nowhere near as good as expressed by those on here. Ramen was good, tasty and fresh but we had much better throughout Kyoto and Japan.

The staff are very friendly, we were sat at the larger table near the door. We had to wait about 5-10minutes for our seats. The place gets really busy at the weekends.

The main issue with the restaurant is it felt very much like a fast food chain. I understand the company is a chain and I don't have a problem with that, it just felt a little too formulaic.

Cheap tasty food but little to no 'real' atmosphere. Try the restaurants on the same street and in the same area. Far more interesting.

Tip: The beer is good!

“Going, going . . . . . . . .”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

29 years ago, when I first went to Nishiki, there were no tourists at all. Perhaps 10 years ago, there were no souvenir shops or open restaurants. I used to enjoy strolling through this market on rainy days - it was so peaceful, except in the evenings when chefs and cooks and housewives rushed around to find fresh fish and delicacies.
Each time I go there now, the place is packed with tourists and each time, another ancient shop is gone. Still, if you have a good imagination, you can enjoy seeing traditional Kyoto foods and salespeople who may represent generations of the same family. Look into each shop, and you may be able to see the original building behind the kitsch. A few shops remain as they always have been, but it's going fast, so see it while you can.

“Vegetarian Ramen in Kyoto”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

We are vegetarians and had virtually given up on the prospect of ramen in Japan. Ippudo was a godsend! We asked at the door if they served vegetarian and were shuffled right in. Like many Japanese restaurants, food is served at a communal table, with sets of garnishes and jugs of iced tea arranged in intervals. We paid about $14 for two giant bowls of vegetarian ramen and it was delicious. Great noodles, rich veggie broth and a heavy dose of black fungus mushroom. We even considered coming back a second day, but restrained ourselves.

“Delicious!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2013

As a ramen lovers find it hard to believe to all the recommendations as this is a chain restaurant. Well, we were wrong! Ramen was delicious, one of the best that we had in Japan and so were the other dishes: gyoza, noodles, etc. Service was quick and efficient and prices were reasonable. The restaurant is situated near the entrance to the Nishiki market behind the Daimaru department store. We would definitely come back on our next visit to Kyoto.
