This didn't really feel like a traditional ryokan. For one, it was bigger than most, and we didn't leave our shoes at the door. However, if you are looking for comfort and luxury, this is a great place to stay. They have private toilets and tubs, and the rooms are very clean and spacious with large televisions. However, the staff treated us like we didn't know anything about Japanese culture. This place clearly caters to Western tourists. The service was almost TOO attentive. I felt like I was being watched! I would not recommend the breakfasts unless you want to enter a food coma immediately afterwards and miss out on all the sightseeing. It was very large, and the server kept coming by my table and trying to show me how to eat (such as literally taking the tofu out of the hot pot and putting it in my sauce, adding my seaweed to my rice, etc.). I would recommend this as a place to stay if you are first encountering Japan. We really enjoyed the tea and the sweets. The location cannot be beat. It is right near the Nishiki Food Market and one of the main shopping streets. The staff at the front desk were very helpful with maps, and there is wireless internet in the lobby. Overall, I felt that it was a very luxurious hotel with Japanese-style rooms (tatami floor, futon bedding). If you are looking for a traditional ryokan, look elsewhere.
