Owner description: The most famous neighborhood in Kyoto is also known as the Geisha district. It is here, among the teahouses and private clubs that you can catch a glimpse of a geisha in full dress including white makeup.

“Authentic and atmospheric”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2014

A perfect little corner of historic Japan. Wander the cobbled streets, have dinner (early or queue!) and take in a traditional show at Gion corner. We also saw a few Geishas!

“The Geisha District”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2014

This was one of my favorite places to visit because it was the very setting of the popular novel and movie, 'Memoirs of a Geisha.' A lot has changed, the feel of the area has been modernized because it's a hot tourist spot. However, I really loved the Geisha houses - they're still there. A tip to the tourists, when you spot a geiko/geisha/maiko, kindly make it quick since they still have jobs to do. Respect!

“Fantastic base in Kyoto”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2014 via mobile

We spent 3 days in this area staying at APA Hotel. The accommodation is in a great position for everything Gion has on offer. Yasaka shrine at the end of the Main Street worth a visit for the beautiful gardens and street food. Cherry blossoms just beautiful. Pontocho Street close to the river for restaurants.
Hanamikoji Dori is very touristy but a good place to spot geisha between about 4 and 6 pm.
Kiyomizu Temple a short bus ride away is amazing, constructed all of wood. Don't miss drinking water from the freshwater springs
or the pitch dark walk( guided by beads) near the ticket office.

lovely street of traditional Japanese Houses and obviously the centre for Geishas but felt a bit over commercialised,
