Owner description: The most famous neighborhood in Kyoto is also known as the Geisha district. It is here, among the teahouses and private clubs that you can catch a glimpse of a geisha in full dress including white makeup.

“My favourite Japanese destination”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

We went searching for cherry blossoms and we certainly found the very best Japan had to offer. They are breathtaking and you can see them during the day and feed carp in the nearby ponds, or at night with the beautiful lighting making them look so special.

Getting lost in the back streets of Gion is amazing, and I have never felt so safe even though I did not have a clue where I was half the time! Spotting a working Geisha walking past to an appointment is a thrill in itself. Even Japanese people stop and stare at these beautiful women.

I was lucky to stumble across the Mikado production, and actually got a seat (no photography allowed). As one of the only white people there i felt unbelievably priveledged to be there.

Gion! Go and go again.

“Fun place at night”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013

We spent a couple of evenings 'uncreepily' watching out for geishas in full get up. But we failed after realizing the geishas we saw were probably local ladies dressing up, as they didn't have the white make up.

But still a nice buzz to the area and plenty of cool places to buy old Edo souvenirs and lots of restaurants to choose from.

It was great to see this precinct. I went at night and was able to see Gaiko and Maiko's heading out or tea ceremonies.

“Welcome to Old-World Japan”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

We loved this area. Every evening we'd find ourselves back in the Gion area, either to simply look around or to find some hidden restaurant spot or to try and spot genuine Geisha's (which we did spot some, see attached pics). This area is just oozing with authentic Japanese history and culture.

TIPS: 1 - to spot a Geisha(s), be in the area in the back streets with the wooden thatched doors around 6pm, you'll see them heading to work and picking each other up. Have your camera ready, they move with ninja stealth and speed (I'm sure they are annoyed by tourists, but they handle it with the utmost grace) 2 - Rent bicycles at Kyoto Cycling (approx $15 US p/day), bicycles is the way to get around in Kyoto. 3 - Don't be afraid to roam the small back streets, that's where the coolest stuff is. 4 - The main street is NOT where all the cool, authentic Japanese stuff is at, refer to #3.
