Owner description: The most famous neighborhood in Kyoto is also known as the Geisha district. It is here, among the teahouses and private clubs that you can catch a glimpse of a geisha in full dress including white makeup.

“Pretty Lights”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

We wandered round this part of the city at night and found it all very pretty with the narrow streets and lit lights. Didn't spot any geisha though and the restaurants were a little on the expensive side.

“Geisha Walking Tour”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2012

Meet outside Kita-Za Theatre Mon/Wed/Fri at 6pm (1,000 yen pp). Was looking forward to this and although interesting and took us around areas of Gion we hadn't yet been, thought it could've been so much more for the 1hour and 40 minutes.

“2 out of 2 for Geisha/Maiko spottings”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2012

Gion is great for a stroll around, especially in the afternoon. It's nice to get yourself lost in some of the winding back alley's and wonder what's going on behind the curtains attached to doorways. We've been in 2010 and 2012 and spotted a Geisha the first time and Maiko the 2nd time. Both times we weren't looking, just strolling about and they happened to just be going about their business. Please remember to be respectful! A fast prime makes all the difference in the dark back alleyways - F/1.4

“Gion is simply over rated”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012 via mobile

Not even your cliche geisha location. There is just so many other things to do in kyoto.

There is some old looking shops. But it's just like any other suburb. The old shops are also not as interesting as those in Takayama. It really is just like any other small town with not so good shopping. It's really a tourist trap. Avoid !!!

“Amazing stroll through ancient Japan”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

Absolutely a must see in Kyoto. A few set backs exist, cars drive through and a few over the top tourist shops exists, however its a great place. As we walked we saw several women dressed as Geisha and plenty of others wearing Kimono. We went back several times.
