“Incredible Ancient Temple”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

1,001 Buddhas fill this 12th century temple which is the longest wooden structure in the world. It is a truly spectacular sight and a great shame that photography is not allowed inside. Despite this drawback the magical scene of the serried ranks of ancient many-limbed carved images will stay with you forever! As other reviewers have mentioned this is a very different, unique and slightly eerie temple experience.

“Quite a sight...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2012

An easy busride from central Kyoto, Sanjusangendo Hall seems rather non-nondescript from the outside. However, once you enter and turn the corner into the main hall, it takes your breath away. We were lucky to have a guide with us who could translate and give us more of an in-depth history of the Temple. If you don't read or speak Japanese I strongly encourage you to see the sights of Kyoto with a guide who can explain the significance of all of these historic sights. An amazing place!

“Unique Temple”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

No photos allowed inside, but you can get a nice guide book as a souvenir. Well worth a visit as it is so different to the other temples.

“Multiples!!!!!!!!!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

As long as you do not attend this high definition ancient art installation of countless golden Buddha statues during the cold months, you will be fondly remembering this experience for quite some time. You must remove your shoes but then you must only walk in your stocking feet for the viewing. So maybe bring a second pair of socks in case the wooden floor emanates freezing air, as when we attended. That said, do enjoy the splendour, majesty and effect of multiples on your visual journey. Do not give one bit of energy to the ill attentive youth who are visiting Kyoto in compulsory culture trips put on by their schools. Try to attend when the archery contests are on. Stunning.
