Owner description: This world heritage site was the home of Tokugawa leyasu, one of the most powerful men in Japan. The castle was built as a residence and not for defense purposes. However, to protect the shogun from enemies, special creaky floorboards were installed to warn of anyone approaching.

“Worth A Visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

It's a big, big place. Don't expect to see a castle as that part is gone. A great garden and given that central Kyoto is very crowded, the space for Nijo-Jo is like having a Central Park.

“Beautiful entry, great screens”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2013

Good spot if interested in a reconstruction (with mannequins in historic garb) of Heian court life. Nice garden, great screen paintings but a little touristy for my taste. I prefer Kenninji, Daigoji, Daikakuji.

“Beautiful grounds”

Lovely grounds but a little too early for the cherry blossoms. Will be absolutely gorgeous once they are out

“UNESCO World Heritage Site”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2013

This wooden castle is an early Edo period building designs. Built in 1603, more than 400yrs old building is well preserved for the new generations to appreciate. The building is elegant yet simple in architectural style. One of the historical site that should not be missed.

Easy to access, popular attraction. Lots of history. Beautiful grounds. Would be "wow" in cherry blossom season.
