Owner description: This world heritage site was the home of Tokugawa leyasu, one of the most powerful men in Japan. The castle was built as a residence and not for defense purposes. However, to protect the shogun from enemies, special creaky floorboards were installed to warn of anyone approaching.

“Beautiful...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2012

Take your shoes off and wonder how things were done some time ago... Walking areas were build to imitate some little bird song while people around to hear that... Park and gardens are stunning. Closing at 4pm if I remember well...

“Impressive moat”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

Great looking castle with a moat!
Parking was expensive even for bicycles and they charged a fair amount for entry as well.

“Not to be missed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

A visit to the Nijo castle is a must just to walk on the spectacular singing floor. Another enormous site with recreations of the Shogun in some sections. The gardens are well worth a walk around and during the right season when the blossom is out it would be even better. It's a big site but nevertheless it can get quite crowded.

“Singing Floors”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

Not to be missed, but can be a mob scene. Very old, but well maintained. Thousands of shoeless people walking thru with the floors talking to them. We went as part of a day long city tour. The sights are very old and historically fantastic.

“Glimpse into history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

This was an interesting place to visit. Although we did speed through some of the indoors to get past all the school groups (so go early)

The floorboards are impressive.
Gardens are also nice. Was more interesting than the nearby imperial garden.
Worth a visit.
