“Good but not among the best in Kyoto”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2014

Kodaiji temple was built in 1605 and is administered by a private trust. Peaceful location and houses relics. Within the campus is Kangetsu Dai (moon viewing pavillion)...the Chinese style cypress bark roof can be admired

“Worth visiting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2014

If you still have the energy to visit another temple put this in your list: it has a really beautiful japanese garden with a pond, painted interiors, which even a little ruined by the time are still great, a really peaceful atmosphere...and for those which don't have the time to reach Arashima also a little bamboo lane to pass through!

“Not very impressive, lots of empty rooms”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2014

Although this place came highly recommended, it was quite a let down. It is more about moneymaking and selling then showing Japan's past. And beware because there is lot of strenuous climbing to do. Most buildings are however empty and there is hardly anything special to do. On the brightside however, the place is not too crowded and a relief after one of the main attractions.

“Beautiful place - memorial from wife to husband”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2014

This is a beautiful place. Ok, so there are many beautiful places in Kyoto. This also features a massive statue (see picture). We went with a guide who helped us understand. Not a lot of info written out in English. Still, very beautiful.

As I understand it, this was a memorial created by a wife for her husband.

“Must see!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2014

If you are in Kyoto at the right time you MUST see the Kodai-ji Temple floodlight. It is one of the best experiences I have ever seen. I began my visit at the far end of the street which is preserved in traditional style and is magical in it's self. Then to the first floodlight temple Entokuin which was good. A 3 temple ticket was 900 yen steep but worth in ( I never found which was the 3rd temple on the ticket). I got lost as the entrance to Kodai-ji is between the entrance and exit of Entokuin but eventually found it. The garden climbs up the hill with lights everywhere, trees reflected in pools, a beautiful cherry tree and eyrie bamboo groves quite spectacular. From the exit I continued along the street to the Yasaka park and shrine where an ancient cherry tree was in blossom and floodlight then down hill back to Gion district. I did this in the dark as a lone female and felt completely safe.
