The Hotel Okura looks very modern for historic Kyoto, but it makes up for it by being all the best that "modern" entails--clean, efficient and comfortable. The rooms are big by Japanese standards, with huge bathrooms, with separate tub and shower stalls. The toilets are, of course, "enhanced", with things that clean and warm you as you sit. I didn't much like the shampoo they gave--in little bottles, of a quality that made my hair fall out--but everything else about the hotel was great. Their concierge was mostly friendly (except the one on Friday night) and knowledgeable, and everyone spoke English well. I applaud them also for hiring female bell hops. There were many bell hops, who did everything from taking your luggage, to getting your taxi, to answering questions about the hotel, and at least half of them were women. (Note: there is no tipping in Japan, not even to bell hops.)
We preferred the Okura to places like Hotel Granvia, in Kyoto Station. Okura is in central Kyoto, walking distance to the covered Kawaramachi shopping district, the historic Gion district, Pontocho nightlife district, and a bike's ride away from most famous shrines and museums. The hotel sits right atop of a subway stop. Kyoto Station may have a lot of malls and restaurants, and is also on a subway stop, but it looks so industrial, and is far from everything worth seeing. Central Kyoto is definitely the place to stay, and Hotel Okura is a great choice.
The hotel has a gym to which there is very limited and costly access. They have restaurants that are grossly overpriced. Luckily the concierge can show you tons of places to eat within walking distance.
We recommend renting a bike and biking around the city. You can bike on the sidewalks, and there is a parking area at the hotel just for bicycles. Note though that most shrines are on top of hills, and the steep paths up are narrow and packed with tourists, so if you intend to visit a lot of shrines, it's better to go on foot.
We booked through Orbitz, and got 50% off the price quoted on the hotel website. Alas, we also had a terrible time changing the date of our reservation through Orbitz when our plans changed.. So use a third party vendor to save money, but note that if you do so, the nice people at the hotel cannot change your reservation for you, and you'll have to go through the nasty people at places like Orbitz. If you do have to contact the nice people at the hotel, use email rather than struggle by phone.
