“Great hotel, in a great location and lovely staff!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013

This hotel was great. The staff were very friendly and helpful and they spoke excellent English. The rooms were very clean and tidy. Also in a great location to getting around Kyoto. I recommend buying a bus pass each day you wish to travel some distance. It's a very cheap and easy way to travel, plus you can buy it at reception on your way out each morning.

After spending 3 nights in Osaka, I came to Kyoto with my wife and stayed for another 3 nights. The hotel is well located near the rail station ( about 3 mins straight walk) and 5 mins walk to the heart of the shopping area and Nishiki Food Market. The room is small (normal in Japan, especially the toilet) and old fashioned as well as the lift, but they are tidy and clean. Free wifi is provided which is rare.

No key card is needed and only one key is provided. You need to drop the key or give it back to the hotel staff every time when you want to leave the hotel, they will keep it for you. When you come back, go to the front desk . After I told the staff my room number, they replied with my surname and I could take the key, but I am wondering about the security problem, I don't think it is secure enough.

My family stayed here for 9 nights.
We got a triple room. The extra bed is very comfortable and the room is eru spacious.
The bathroom, as well, is clean and big enough (comparing to japanese size).
The location is very good, just a short walk from nijo castle, kyoto imperial palace, sanjo, teramachi and a lot of others spots!
We didn't have breakfast at the hotel (it is 1000 ienes per person) as we preferred to buy breakfast at the convinient stores close to the hotel (there is a "7eleven", a "FamilyMart" and a "Lawson Store" close).
And, finally, the staff speaks really good english!

we spent 4 nights there, in a correct room but with no view. very well situated lodging but transparent staff, helpful but very distant, probably the japanese approach. they speak english (not obvious even in this touristic city of japan). many museums nearby and an automatic restaurent.

Room Tip: desert lobby, no coffee table or cosy corner, just 2 used benches. smoking allowed in the hotel but...

You will certainly fall in love with the Gimmond staff. They speak english (in Japan its not a easy thing to find out), they are nice, friendly and help A LOT! The hotel is close to Karasuma station, and you can go walking almost everywhere (in summer its a little bit more complicated: too too hot). Rooms are OK, bathroom is big for japanese standards and very clean and quiet. The best part: its cheap and has free wi-fi! Loved!

The location is fantastic! You're a block and half away from the Manga Museum. It's in a big street and they're lots of restaurant, shops and stores around the hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They speak very good English and they helped us get to specific locations that we wanted to go to. The room was nice and clean.

"Budget" and utilitarian: hard beds, hard husk pillows, rock-hard sofa, this is not a place to come to to relax after a hard day's sight-seeing. The bath is tiny with a slight odor of mold. No grab bar by the sitting-only tub, which makes it hard to get out of if one happens to be tall and not too limber. The curtains don't block the light: bring a mask. If the room faces East, it will get full light at 4:30am in June. The decor is early dorm-room, firmly stuck in the 1960s. The restaurants, surprisingly, are well-decorated. Breakfast at both is reasonably priced considering the cost of a cup of coffee in Kyoto. A bit unusual fare for the Western-style breakfast as often happens in Asia but generous enough.
