“A place to be!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2013

You will certainly fall in love with the Gimmond staff. They speak english (in Japan its not a easy thing to find out), they are nice, friendly and help A LOT! The hotel is close to Karasuma station, and you can go walking almost everywhere (in summer its a little bit more complicated: too too hot). Rooms are OK, bathroom is big for japanese standards and very clean and quiet. The best part: its cheap and has free wi-fi! Loved!

The location is fantastic! You're a block and half away from the Manga Museum. It's in a big street and they're lots of restaurant, shops and stores around the hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They speak very good English and they helped us get to specific locations that we wanted to go to. The room was nice and clean.

"Budget" and utilitarian: hard beds, hard husk pillows, rock-hard sofa, this is not a place to come to to relax after a hard day's sight-seeing. The bath is tiny with a slight odor of mold. No grab bar by the sitting-only tub, which makes it hard to get out of if one happens to be tall and not too limber. The curtains don't block the light: bring a mask. If the room faces East, it will get full light at 4:30am in June. The decor is early dorm-room, firmly stuck in the 1960s. The restaurants, surprisingly, are well-decorated. Breakfast at both is reasonably priced considering the cost of a cup of coffee in Kyoto. A bit unusual fare for the Western-style breakfast as often happens in Asia but generous enough.

Location

Hotel Gimmond is a 5-minute walk from the nearest subway, which is 3 stops from Kyoto station. It is also a 10-minute walk from Nishiki Market, and the popular Gogyo Ramen, along with small shops and cafes. There are also many convenience stores around the vicinity of the hotel. It also serves as a good base to explore other attractions such as Nijo castle, Fushimi Inari, etc. Gion is a good 20 minutes walk, where you will pass by a large shopping arcade along the way.

Room/Service

Double room was good, some might complain that it's a little small, but it's perfectly fine for the price paid, and it was clean, with all necessary amenities provided. Daily housekeeping in the morning.

Staff were very friendly and able to speak English well; they would also google places you wish to go and give you directions. Get a map from the front desk to navigate around the area.

Overall, for the price paid, it is very value for money; stayed 3 nights and would recommend any first timers to Kyoto to stay here.

I am a 66 year old retired teacher who travels solo. I stayed 11 nights in May and absolutely recommend this hotel. The location is very convenient. The subway is 1/2 block away with an elevator so luggage was easily handled. 3 stops to Kyoto Station make it easy to do day trips. All the desk personnel were friendly and helpful. The free Wifi and small refrigerator made this a home away from home. Perfectly quiet and spotlessly clean. Air conditioning top notch.

The room was clean, wi-fi worked well, convenience stores nearby as well as an Italian and Japanese restaurant but I didnt eat there. The hotel is on a main street but I didnt notice the noise.

The only downside were the thin walls, I only discovered this when I had loud Italians next door and they wouldnt stop talking. Luckily they left after the second night I was there.

The rooms are reasonable size (we stayed in a triple room) but the toilet is quite small. We are Asians so we did not mind but can imagine this would be a problem for Caucasians who are bigger built. The location was a few streets away from Daimaru where many of the buses which service the sights are so we had to walk to take the bus. However, if you plan to go Arashiyama, there are two direct
Buses which go there so very convenient for that day trip. Overall, for the price we paid, it was good value for money. Other hotels I searched was at least double in price if located closer to town area.
My only gripe is they only give one flat pillow per bed and that was not very comfortable.
