“Conveniently located”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2009

Hotel is a very convenient 5 minute stroll from the station and bus station. I usually would never stay near the train station as they are usually int he worst parts of town however we are in Japan so its all safe.

I arrived in the morning so couldn't check in until 3 which was fine, they stored my luggage and I strolled back to the station where the 10 story Isetan was located. The english speaking information centre is based in here on the 9th floor so I stopped there to get some maps and use their internet. As it was raining i stayed in the area. I wandered back to check in at 3 and then as it had stopped raining headed out to see Kyoto.

The rooms were the smallest I had the entire trip. Not a lot of room for luggage. However they were fine. Given i was only sleeping here I don't get too worried about the room size. Staff always smiled and nodded when i walked through the lobby.
There is a bath on the top floor. I didn't go up however I did regularly seem to end up in the lift with men in robes so some people were definately using it.

If you are sightseeing then you will need to be on the buses so being located near the bus station is useful.

My fiance and I stayed here for one night as a Kyoto excursion during our 3 weeks in Tokyo. We initially tried to check-in at the wrong APA hotel, there is another APA hotel (ekimae) on the way to the correct one (horikawadori) but staff were very helpful providing us a map to the right one.

So we got there eventually, just 5 minutes walk from Kyoto station into some quiet back streets of the city. Check in staff speak very good English. We arrived early and the room was not yet ready, so we left our luggage and went sight seeing for the day. We got back late in the evening after a night-time stroll along Pontocho, collected our bags and were very much looking forward to bed. I had asked staff at check-in if breakfast offered western-style food and was told yes. So we pre-booked breakfast for the next morning.

Our room, on the top floor, was a compact but functional space with bath and shower, TV, hairdryer and plenty of storage space for a short-stay. The room was very clean and tidy and beds very comfortable. A small TV had a range of Japanese channels. Yukata robes are provided, complete with cute origami characters! The room was very quiet for 99% of the evening. At one point, the heavens opened and there was a heavy rainshower which rattled against the windows quite bad, but there was no traffic noise or from other guests (despite us being on the same floor as the roof top pool).

The next morning, we checked out and went for breakfast. This was the only thing that let down our experience of the hotel. Although I had asked if western food was available, it wasn't of great quality and the food is predominantly Japanese style. As we had already paid, we made the best of what was there. I think we ended up with a bowl full of fruit salad (from a tin) and yoghurt, plus a couple of bread rolls with butter and honey. So that was a bit of a shame, but not a distaster. The Japanese breakfast items were hot, plentiful and everyone else seemed to be enjoying them fine!

So breakfast aside, our experience of the hotel was excellent and it was great being so close to the station. Really good value for money and if anyone else is considering a day trip to Kyoto on the bullet train, I thoroughly recommend stretching the budget and making an overnight stay of it here. You'll get to see so much more of Kyoto that way.

The hotel has very clean room and of moderate size. It is also very close to the main train station and makes travelling a lot easier. The staffs' english is not very good so avoid asking them complicated questions. Perhaps the english speaking staff were not on duty that day. Another downside is the appalling breakfast buffet costing around £10-£12. Avoid that at all cost as you will not be missing anything.

Fire alarm warning: We were woken up one early morning with the fire alarm, instructing us to head down the fire escape as there is a fire on the first floor. Panic station, we grab our passports and wallet, put on the dressing gown and joined the throng of dazed and seemingly lost souls looking for the fire escape. We were on the 3rd floor and we got down to the ground floor intact and not a single hair singed. 10 minutes later, no sign of fire, no sign of police, no sign of fire engine, and yes...no sign of any hotel staffs, just a group of tourists in their dressing gown and pyjamas and meager belongings. Well some of them managed to haul down their luggages down the fire escape and i'd like to know how they manage that. Anyway, we got curious as to what was happening so we went back inside the lobby, and realised that there was no fire. There was no staff at hand to explain what went on so we followed the same throng of dazed people back up to our room.

Good note: My brother in law accidentally left his PSP case with 15 games at the hotel. He rang them and they found it in the room. Two weeks later, he was reconciled with his games and he was a happy soul. Great service!
