“great for budget trip, just avoid the buffet breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2009

The hotel has very clean room and of moderate size. It is also very close to the main train station and makes travelling a lot easier. The staffs' english is not very good so avoid asking them complicated questions. Perhaps the english speaking staff were not on duty that day. Another downside is the appalling breakfast buffet costing around £10-£12. Avoid that at all cost as you will not be missing anything.

Fire alarm warning: We were woken up one early morning with the fire alarm, instructing us to head down the fire escape as there is a fire on the first floor. Panic station, we grab our passports and wallet, put on the dressing gown and joined the throng of dazed and seemingly lost souls looking for the fire escape. We were on the 3rd floor and we got down to the ground floor intact and not a single hair singed. 10 minutes later, no sign of fire, no sign of police, no sign of fire engine, and yes...no sign of any hotel staffs, just a group of tourists in their dressing gown and pyjamas and meager belongings. Well some of them managed to haul down their luggages down the fire escape and i'd like to know how they manage that. Anyway, we got curious as to what was happening so we went back inside the lobby, and realised that there was no fire. There was no staff at hand to explain what went on so we followed the same throng of dazed people back up to our room.

Good note: My brother in law accidentally left his PSP case with 15 games at the hotel. He rang them and they found it in the room. Two weeks later, he was reconciled with his games and he was a happy soul. Great service!

I love going to Japan and staying at the hotels that provide all you need at a low price. Think, single rooms for May 2009 in APA horikawadori start at $60-70! For 80 bucks a night I booked a top floor room with all you can eat breakfast, that's a deal! I have been to Kyoto 3 times and I always book this hotel, because it is close to Kyoto station - 5 minutes by foot, it has a friendly staff that speaks English well, and it has a hot tub on the top floor. My budget does not allow to stay in fancy ryokan or more expensive hotels to enjoy the onsen, so this is the choice for me.

Another great perk - this hotel has a coin laundry on site! About 300 yen will get your clothes washed and dried. There are internet stations in the lobby, 100 yen for 10 minutes - plenty time to check e-mail.

Many travelers complain that rooms are small, which they are. But I only sleep in mine, spending the rest of the day outside, so who cares? If you keep your clothes and other belongings neat and organized in the room, it doesn't feel so cramped.

Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone traveling on a budget.
