“The location of this hotel is excellent but that’s about it.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2014

We booked the semi double room and it was so small we hardly had a place to put ourselves. It’s basically a double bed and very little else. Luckily they had space and moved us to the 9th floor (9 to 11 are premier floors) to a double room, (not without charging an extra $20/night) seems that "semi" has a meaning here.... This new room was still very small but bearable, not that we had other options…
The hotel is located 5-7 min walk form the train and bus stations which makes it easy for moving around (most in-city transportation is via bus). BUT is not the only hotel in that vicinity…
For what it offers the hotel was overpriced. We were visiting in a busy week; still $160 per night (including the $20 we paid for the upgrade) seems to me a lot for what they give you…
My recommendation, don’t wait and book well in advance you will find better hotels and deals, if you have to stay there don't go for the "semi" unless you are 30 or younger :)

Wife and I stayed 6 nights in this hotel from April 9th. We booked a premier semi double room in January. We were given a room on the 9th floor which was designated as a premier floor (9 to 11 floors). The room was very small and we had to squeeze in the luggage and to organise the placement of clothings etc to provide some space to move around. The bed was adequate for 2 asian sized adults but without much space to toss around. Room cleaning was efficient and toiletries were provided each day. Water pressure for the baths was very strong.
The hotel is located very near the Kyoto train station, being about 10 mins. walk from the central gate of the station. The bus terminal is in front of the railway station. Traveling around city by bus and rail is thus very convenient. Numerous food outlets are located within and around the station area.
There is an onsen on the 11th floor, free for hotel guests and we made use of it to soak ourselves in after the end of each days traveling. It was very relaxing.
We do not have any negative comments on the hotel. It is just a small business-like hotel without any frills.

The Bad - found out the real meaning of "Semi Double room", the room is very small for 2 average-size person to stay in, no place to place your luggage except at end of the bed. The bed in Semi-Double room are only two-third the wide of a Queen-size bed. it is impossible to sleep comfortably in one.
We wanted to change room, but they were full. So one of us end-up sleep on the floor(narrow entrance passage) for 3 days.
Its good enough for a single person to sleep-in. This is a basic tourist hotel, service staff are average, unless you speak Japanese.
The Good - it is about 8-9 minutes walk from the Kyoto JR station. Where you could find lots of eateries in the basement and Isetan store next to it.

Room Tip: Ask for room with Queen-size bed, of course you will have to pay more.

The APA is well located ... relatively plain but reasonable value. We had six enjoyable. Days in the area. We learned "the HARD way" that reserving a western bed is important. Our first night was on a bed so hard that good sleep was impossible and was a terrible start to the holiday. The next day they very kindly moved us to the Premiere floor with Sealy Cloud beds, and at no extra charge. Just a wonderful change!!!
The location is great, very near huge incredible Kyoto train and bus stations.

Room Tip: Book the Sealy cloud bed

You need to walk at least 10 mins from Kyoto Terminal Station. Small lobby with mechanical operations. Staff are neither rude nor polite; like asking a human robot questions. Room is extremely small with only enough walkway if you walk sideway to your bed. Very pricey at ¥19,400 per night. My friends stayed at another hotel nearer to station & much bigger at only ¥16,000 per nite.

I stayed here over New Year's for 4 nights. I ended up booking the smallest double room possible, as I made reservations at the last minute and that room was about the only one left in Kyoto! The hotel is very close to the main train station, as in you must walk, and slightly hard to find. The staff spoke great english and were very helpful in providing a map of the immediate area and the location of amenities such as an ATM (hotel does not have one, closest is a few blocks away) and restaurants. Our room, as expected, was tiny and the bed was equally as tiny. I did not mind the tiny room and bed as much as I did not like that the bed was as hard as a rock. I had a difficult time sleeping. My boyfriend, however, loved the hard bed. The room also had a small desk, TV and unstocked minifridge. The bathroom was also very, very small, but did contain a soak tub. The hotel had a Japanese-style spa (onsen) with a steam room and hot and cold baths. These looked very nice but were separated by sex and everyone wore their birthday suit! I suppose I should have expected this, as it is the cultural norm, but I was sill a bit shy. I ended up not using the spa due to time constraints, but it looked very relaxing and the other women (Western and Japanese) seemed to enjoy it. Finally, the hotel was not very expensive and had a good location.

Note: the hotel has very strict checkin times. You cannot check in early without prior arrangement.

Room Tip: Do not choose the room with the smallest double bed if you are two people!

I stayed in the Hotel for 9 nights with my son and was using Kyoto as my base station to look around from Dec 20-29, 2013. The location of the hotel is great as it is very near the JR Kyoto train station and central bus station to move around Kyoto. Just a few minutes brisk walking from the hotel to the station. As reviewed by many others, I share the same opinion about the room size and facilities, small but clean and functional. They do indeed clean the room daily and change the bath towels, shavers, and whatnot. The most enjoyable part of my stay at the APA Horikawadori is the hot-bath/spa/public bath located on the 11th floor of the hotel. I used the facility everyday during my stay and it was all free. They provide excellent facilities in the spa and I would recommend it to future guests at the Hotel. Friendly and helpful staff at the front-desk.
Overall, it was value for money as I had booked the Hotel without knowing too much through a travel website. Will consider staying there again during my future visit to Kyoto.

Room Tip: Not sure what to add as my room was adequate
