“Excellent choice!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2012 via mobile

This is not a fancy hotel, BUT, it has a great location, an excellent staff and a very reasonable price. I originally intended to stay in Kyoto for only 3 days, but decided to add 2 more nights to my reservation after falling in love with the town. The room was fine, my view was of a canal and not another hotel, and there were many tourist sights within walking distance. (It is on the south border of Kyoto University.) Also, the #5 bus stops across the street and takes you directly to the central Kyoto train station.

Highly recommended...

I'm a frequent traveler to Japan and lived in Kyoto for one year. I just discovered the Kyoto Traveler's Inn and stayed there for 3 nights. I highly recommend it for its access (a short, pleasant walk along a canal to a subway station, or 20 minute walk to "downtown"), location (near the lovely Higashiyama mountains and neighborhoods of eastern Kyoto and across the street from museums and the Heian Shrine), service (friendly and knowledgeable), facilities (no elevator, but spa in the basement, great lobby cafe, and coin laundry facilities) and VALUE (very inexpensive, for Japan). Well placed between the two most important turistic areas ok Kyoto (south- and north-bound), Traveler's Inn is not difficult to reach. 6 metro stations from Kyoto main Station (cost 250 Yen - 2 lines, green and red), about 20 minutes, to get to Higashiyama station, than just 10 mins walking. 20 mins walking from the city River, 30 from the night-life streets.
The hotel offers good services such as: a restaurant just next to the main hall, a public "onsen" (very relaxing) from 3pm till 12pm and bike renting (but pay attention, biking throughout Kyoto is as simple as it can be frustrating ... if your intention is to use a bike to visit all the temples, well remember that parking is not easy nor cheap!).
Staff was very friendly and good english-speaking (Japanese standard).
We booked a triple room for a weekend in august; it was very simple and small, but functional anyway (Air conditioning and LAN free Internet). It also offered a good sleep quality, even if was a little bit noisy from outside.
+ : a very nice veranda, stree/ canal - side, perfect for a relaxing evening.!

Kyoto is quite expensive and for a budget hotel the room prices are pretty high (at least according to my european standards). However it is difficult to find something cheaper in Kyoto.
Having premised that, we had a wonderful experience at the Kyoto traveler's inn. We booked a traditional japanese room with tatami flooring and futons and we loved it: small but spotless and cosy.

the location of this hotel is also a plus. The Higashiyama area is packed with amazing temples and shrines, all within walking distance from the hotel. The train station is farly distant, at about 5 km (but well served by buses and subway trains). several shops in the area too.

recommended.

During the Hinari, the cherry blossom Sakura Festival, it's hard to find a room in Kyoto, and prices rise up in a dizzy way. Our best solution was this hotel and I like to recommend it for, among others, the following reasons: the location, almost in front of Heian Shrine, in the north-eastern part of the city; the hotel is also at a walking distance from the "Path of the Philosopher" and the Ginkaku-ji (the Silver Pavilion), and from Gion, the Geisha home area, further in the south. If the rooms are basic with a reduced space, the atmosphere is friendly, with people of every age and from everywhere. There’s free Wi-Fi in the common area and the staff, very skilled and so much helpful, speak English fluently. If one is bored with the Japanese food, in the restaurant he can experience both breakfast and dinner in western style, at a very, very good price.
If they are available, ask for the rooms in the façade (the entrance side) with good views. They are much better than those located in the back side which, due to the proximity of other buildings, could look a bit dark and claustrophobic.

I have to start with the negative. It's way overdue for a facelift, i.e. wall coverings, carpeting, furniture, bathrooms. Then the positive - absolutely prime location. Our western style room on the 4th floor (no elevator - be forewarned!) had a gorgeous view of the grand Torii (shrine gate) and overlooked the canal with cherry blossoms in full bloom on both banks. We walked to most attractions and found charming small inexpensive cafes also within walking distance. The staff at the hotel are very attentive, and the room was clean, but it was crowded with an extra bed that we had to stumble over, and no closet whatsoever. But, there were clean kimonos laid out for us each day. The restaurant is not bad, and there's a very convenient 7/11 right around the corner. Wi-Fi free and washer/dryer available - both good points for budget travelers. We would stay there again.

Room Tip: Higher floors (western style rooms) have good views.

Kyoto Traveller's Inn is an okay budget hotel.

The plus side: inexpensive, free wifi at lobby, accessible by bus No. 5 and No.100 from Kyoto Station to Heian Shrine.

Down side: buses run till 11pm. If you have to find your way back to the hotel after 11pm, you'll probably have to take a subway and walk for another 15-25 minutes (in cold weather), or take a cab and pay the expensive fare!

The room was sleep-able: it's clean, but look run-down, and rather not well lit. If you just need a clean, safe place to sleep, it's fine.
