“Very nice hotel but not close to anything!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2014

If you're on a sight-seeing trip, you might want to rethink booking this one. It is quite literally in the middle of a residential area with not much going on. They do have a free shuttle bus every 20 mins going to Karasumaoike subway station, but thats no good as the subway in Kyoto does not provide access to most of the top sight seeing in Kyoto. You will instead need to walk about half of a mile to the bus stop and that can be rather inconvenient of you like to go back to your hotel room to drop off things or freshen up before you to go to another place. Outside of the location problems, the hotel is otherwise really neat. The lobby is very impressive and the rooms are equally well appointed. We absolutely loved the bathroom with a massive shower!

For food, there were restaurants in the hotel, but everything seemed way over priced and there is nothing nearby either. So be prepared to spend a good fortune if you decide to eat there.

There was no gym or a spa in the hotel which seemed strange. The lady who showed us our room said there is a gym nearby that we can use but there is an additional charge for it. We politely declined.

The hotel is definitely not a 4.5 star hotel. The restaurants are very expensive. I would rate the hotel as a 3.5 star hotel. But that would be very generous.

The hotel is in a location away from the rest of the sight seeing locations. It's close to the Imperial Palace. That is about it. Thank goodness they have a free shuttle into town but it drops u off at a location where u will need to walk about four blocks to get to the streets with the stores.

When we come back to Kyoto, there is absolutely no way we would ever consider booking at this hotel again. Hotel Granvia is located at the Kyoto Subway Terminal. Book yourself there. Many restaurants and things to do there.

The rooms at Brighton are larger than your average rooms in Kyoto but honestly, you won't really care about that when you are in Kyoto. You're going to be upset that you need to plan your entire day ahead of time because it will be so inconvenient to travel back to the hotel to freshen up for dinner.

Do yourself a favor, book a hotel closer to the shops or restaurants. I am not kidding, there are maybe one or two restaurants within walking distance of this hotel. It is a very inconvenient location for a hotel.

Some of the travelers who rated this hotel to be five stars must not travel very often. Do NOT book your vacation at this hotel. I cannot reiterate enough how inconvenient this hotel location is.

We booked this hotel based on the great reviews we read. The best thing about this hotel is that the staff is EXCELLENT. Two stars alone for the amazing concierge who helped us with not only sightseeing but figuring out laundry and much more. The rooms are comfortable with nice linens and furnishings, but it a 5 star hotel it is not (it would be maybe be comparable to a Westin in the US). Our room overlooked the depressing parking lot and a stone wall and they told us that to move to a better view it would cost more.

The location is really inconvenient for seeing the Kyoto sites. It is near Imperial Park but that's it- no nearby restaurants or interesting things to do within easy walking distance. When you leave for the day, you really have to plan because there's no way you are going all the way back to the hotel- it is just so far out of the way. Which would be ok if the hotel were less expensive. But for some reason they are charging almost double the rate of comparable hotels in better/more central locations. We ended up leaving early to stay somewhere that was more conveniently located, however, they were very accommodating about it and didn't give us a hard time which was nice.

I had read all the reviews and chose this hotel, and it lived up to the positive sentiments. The staff was extremely gracious and accommodating. The room was spacious for four of us. We didn't eat at the hotel, since all the reviews talked about how pricy it was. There is a charming little breakfast place at the end of the block that we liked. We were also a close walk to the Imperial Gardens where we could go for a run. I didn't find the hotel's location to be a problem. We used the shuttle or took a cab. Oddly enough, my favorite thing about the hotel was our bathroom. The shower/tub combo was really cool. And somehow, the shower was just great. Incredible water pressure was fantastic and it was so relaxing. Then...the toilet was SO cool! Heated seat with a lot of bells and whistles. It was fun place to stay.

We loved our stay at the Kyoto Brighton hotel. We weren't certain about travelling to Kyoto without knowing much Japanese, but the wonderful staff at the Brighton made our visit a pleasure. The room was terrific as were the amenities.

We had breakfast in the hotel twice, and drinks in the lobby. The staff helped us find wonderful places to dine outside the hotel and provided great directions to all the places we wanted to visit. I would highly recommend this hotel to visiting westerners.

This is not everyone's choice for location (in what is a really big city) but the hotel is very nice. Everything worked very well during my stay, from wi-fi to room service. I thought the Western breakfast was among the best I have had in Japanese hotels - lots of choice and many delicate and well-presented things. The outside swimming pool cannot of course be used during the many cold months.

I am not normally a fan of big hotels like this, they can be impersonal and nothingy, but we all loved this place. Not altogether that many western guests, and is something of a wedding venue for the local community which can make for great people watching! The Room was brilliant, comfortable, quiet and with lots of modcons to make our stay comfortable, and as you might expect from this part of the world, nothing was too much trouble.... Just around the corner from the Imperial Palace - highly recommended.

Room Tip: Don't forget a visit to the roof terrace pool! :)
