For approximately AUD$80 per night for a semidouble room with bathroom this is great value!
Located only a short distance from Shijo-Kawaramachi station, a short taxi ride to Kyoto station, and within walking distance to Pontocho, Gion, The Imperial Palace and Nijo castle.
The area it is in is very vibrant, with lots of shops and restaurants, and a couple of convenience stores.
Ask at front desk for an internet connection kit if you bring your laptop- it's free.
Room is your basic Japanese business hotel room - tiny but serves the purpose.
Highly recommended.

Had trouble finding the hotel because they had just changed their name - but the locals were very helpful. The Hotel is a bit old and very basic - good selection of vending machines on each floor and a laundry room for guest use (not readily available in Japan). The staff were very accomidating and eager to be helpful - great english! The rooms are very ordinary but clean.
Don't order a massage!

Kyoto has a higher cost of living than Osaka nearby. Therefore, it is often that their hotel room rates are comparative to Tokyo's. This hotel is considered good budget. Set in the most happening area -- it is within walking distance to Pontocho and Nishiki market. Major department stores are closeby too. Kawaramachi subway brings you back to Osaka (Umeda station) direct about 45mins and 390JPY one way. The room and washroom are clean. They provide a good enough basic set of toiletries. The room size is just nice and bed is comfortable (Serta mattress!). The staff are friendly. What more can you ask?

A nice hotel situated on the busy Kawaramachi-dori shopping street. Great location for Maruyama-koen, Gion and Shojo station. It's about 15 minutes (including the walk) to Kyoto station, and there are buses galore on the street outside.

As with most Japanese hotels, space is at a premium. But what there is is very clean and tidy.

Attention to detail is impressive - there are 'anti-static' pads by the lift buttons, so you don't give yourself a shock when you call an elevator. There is a hotplate in each room for your kettle (provided). You get a nice crisp yakuta to wear as well.

There is also a fridge for your drinks, etc. in each room. There is a small laundry room with washing machines and dryers.

Staff as always are very friendly and helpful. I'd quite happily stay there again.

“Small rooms, central but noisy location”

Hotel Unizo Kyoto

We visited Kyoto in April and stayed here based on suggestions in the forums. However, the rooms were tiny, so be forewarned. The other problem was, because our room fronted Kawaramachi-dori, one of the main night thoroughfares of Kyoto, noise was a problem particularly if one has to open the double-paned window for ventilation. It was the transitional season in Kyoto, and when we asked about the non-functioning air-conditioning, the management told us that it had not been turned on yet. Otherwise, the service and cleanliness of the rooms are decent by Japanese standards. If deciding to stay here, I suggest asking for a room which faces away from Kawaramachi-dori.
