We stayed at the New Miyako Hotel for two nights in September, 2008. It was our first hotel of many during our 14 night trip to Japan. We left the hotel with a good impression of the city and the people.
The hotel is a good base for sightseeing and easy to find from Kyoto Station. It is just south of Kyoto Station. If you are arriving by Shinkansen from the south, you can see the hotel from the train. If you arrive by Haruka Express from Kansai Airport, the hotel is on the opposite side of the tracks. From the main lobby, take the escalator to the second floor and cross the enclosed pedestrian bridge over the tracks. As you exit the station on the south, look to your right. The hotel is the high rise building on the right.
The staff was very courteous - greeting us with umbrellas every day. (Our trip was at the height of Japan's typhoon season.) They spoke English well and didn't laugh at our attempts at Japanese. The business center has two computers that you can use for free for 30 minutes at a time.
Our room was in the older part of the hotel and looked out onto the courtyard and the newer South Wing. Our room was very similar to 70's style hotels in Europe, with a small tv, two twin beds, and wood veneer vanity. There were yukatas, slippers, and a hot water pot with tea. I'm not a tea drinker, so I took hot chocolate with me.
The bathroom was one plastic unit - very similar to bathrooms found in business hotels in Japan. It was clean and had everything we needed.
You can catch the bus to anywhere in Kyoto on the north side of the station (the Kyoto Tower side) for 220 yen (about $2.20 USD). There are 3 main tourist routes that will take you to the major shrines, temples, and hot spots in the city. Ask the Bus Information Desk in the basement of the station for maps.
