It's not a bad ryokan, but just be prepared that it's like going back in time and staying in a boarding school. Mrs Yuhara and her son are really friendly and helpful and provided us with very handy and detailed information, but I would not stay here again.
First of all, the place is really hard to find because no map or directions were provided; all we got was an adress and phone number. If it wasn't for a really friendly Japanese lady who called the ryokan to get directions, we would have dragged our luggage around for another hour.
Second, they don't have internet...yes, there are internet cafes in Kyoto, but it's useless when there is a 11 pm curfew and you just happen to have to find some information at 11.30 pm. So make sure you have every information you need before stepping into this ryokan.
Third, curfew at 11 pm. We knew they had a curfew and thought we wouldn't mind or wouldn't be bothered by it, but it did! Especially when you are planning to go on an one day trip to Kobe, Nara or Himeiji, it's not nice to have to think of the time all the time!! It's like being 12 again!
Fourth, you have to leave the ryokan by 10 am and only come back at 3 pm, because of cleaning. Don't know about other people, but I wouldn't mind if the room wasn't cleaned every day, how dirty can you get it in one day?! Clean towels is sufficient for me. We didn't have problem getting out of the ryokan by 10 am because we were on a very tight schedule, but what about people who have jetlag problems and need the extra sleep?
Fifth, bare room, nothing is provided for, except towls and bathrobes. You have to ask for everything else. They are very friendly about it and it's never a problem, but i'd rather not bother people all the time for such small things! No communal fridge, so be prepared to drink lukewarm water in summertime or buy 500ml bottles everyday.
Sixth, they clean the sheets by themselves, so there will be stains on your sheets and towls, it's not dirty, but it looks a bit weird.
Seventh, don't stay in the Himashi-room (don't know if i spelled it correctly, but it starts with a H), because the washing machine is located right underneath and it kept me awake for two nights, even with my earplugs in.
It's really not a bad place to stay and it's location is very convient, but it's so boarding school-like; we even had to ask whether we can shower or not, because bathtime is only till 10 pm!! We could shower, but it's just so weird to have to ask!
