We stayed at this guesthouse for 4 nights recently. Our room was a Japanese style triple room, with a private bathroom. Tour Club offers a basic accommodation, but considering the price it offers great value for money.
The room was clean and the futon beds very comfortable. The bathroom is tiny, but adequate.
The location is good, somewhat far from the main sightseeing areas perhaps, but on the other hand only a short walk from Kyoto station, making transportation easy. The guesthouse is located in a quiet area, which is nice during nighttime.
The staff speak good English and are very helpful. You can tell that they really want you to feel welcome. As others have pointed out, the binder with information and recommendations they’ve prepared for their guests is really helpful. They have also tried to give a "Japanese touch" to the place by creating a tiny zen garden, for instance. Their ambition to give you a good stay while charging you as little as possible gives Tour Club a degree of warmth and charm not commonly experienced in budget accommodations.
This is a place dominated by backpackers, so if you don’t like that kind of atmosphere you should consider staying elsewhere. There is nothing of a traditional ryokan-feel to this guesthouse.
