“Great value for money”

Tour Club

Sep 17, 2008

We stayed at this guesthouse for 4 nights recently. Our room was a Japanese style triple room, with a private bathroom. Tour Club offers a basic accommodation, but considering the price it offers great value for money.

The room was clean and the futon beds very comfortable. The bathroom is tiny, but adequate.

The location is good, somewhat far from the main sightseeing areas perhaps, but on the other hand only a short walk from Kyoto station, making transportation easy. The guesthouse is located in a quiet area, which is nice during nighttime.

The staff speak good English and are very helpful. You can tell that they really want you to feel welcome. As others have pointed out, the binder with information and recommendations they’ve prepared for their guests is really helpful. They have also tried to give a "Japanese touch" to the place by creating a tiny zen garden, for instance. Their ambition to give you a good stay while charging you as little as possible gives Tour Club a degree of warmth and charm not commonly experienced in budget accommodations.

This is a place dominated by backpackers, so if you don’t like that kind of atmosphere you should consider staying elsewhere. There is nothing of a traditional ryokan-feel to this guesthouse.

We stayed in Tour Club for 8 nights in March and had a wonderful stay. The hostel is on a nice quiet street less than a ten minute walk to Kyoto station. We found this to be a great location as you are close to lots of good places to eat and all the transport options. We stayed in a private Japanese style twin room which was suprisingly spacious! The room was spotlessly clean and the beds were very comfortable. We had a small but perfectly adaquate bathroom. The little things made this hotel great. There was a big folder of suggestions of things to do in the city, places to eat, sites, rainy day places, bathhouses and a little suggested siteseeing plan which also showed transport options. We would really recommend this place for budget conscious travellers or just people who would perfer to stay somewhere with Japanese style accomodation and a nice atmosphere. It definately beats staying in a bland chain hotel! A lovely place which we would really recommend!

We stayed at Tour Club for 4 nights recently. This is a great clean basic accommodation for budget travellers. We stayed in a Japanese style private room with bathroom and shower, and it was very basic, certainly not a luxurious ryokan, but on the other hand was clean and comfortable; very much adequate for our needs.

The best thing about the rooms was the blue binder of Kyoto information that the owners have put together for their guests. This collection of tips and recommendations is truly special and far better then our Lonely Planet. The owners put a lot of work into it, including maps and photos. It is particularly good in regards to local neighbourhood around Tour Club which you can explore on foot. It recommends everything from little nearby restaurants to try yakitori to neighbourhood onsen baths. It has a great explanation of Japanese food. It also contains great insider info on local culture and transportation as well as Kyoto sights. That binder alone is worth staying at Tour Club and I wish more hotels did something like this.

The location of Tour Club is great. It's about a 5 minute walk from JR Kyoto and very central. There is free wi-fi internet included, which is a plus. There is also a reasonably priced coin laundry.

The only negative is that the walls are very thin and you can hear absolutely everything going on next door. On 3 out of the 4 nights that was not a big deal. But on the last night we had bad luck of having "backpacker party-animal neighbours" who made a lot of noise until 3am. If I could suggest one thing for Tour Club, it would be to better commit to enforcing the quiet time after 11pm.

Overall, Tour Club is a great choice for budget minded travellers who only need the simple basics. I would stay here again. However, if you normally stay at the Hyatt, this place is probably not for you and you won't enjoy the "backpacker atmosphere". Cheers.

This hotel is about a 10 minute walk from kyoto station. It is good if you want somewhere close to Kyoto station and something basic. We stayed in a double room with an ensuite which was okay, it was definately not the best place we stayed. We also stayed at Ryokan Shimizu which is about 150m closer to Kyoto station than tour club, it was about $20 more per night but was a lot nicer, larger room, nice atmosphere and you have your own fridge.

This place is good if you just want the basics but I wont stay there again.

“Fantastic value for money”

Tour Club

Tour Club was the cheapest, cleanest and best value for money accomodation in Tokyo. We had en ensuite room (the ensuite was tiny but did the job) with tatami mat futons. These were so comfy. The Tour Club provides a comprehensive guide to Kyoto in English with maps, itineraries, restaurant guides etc. Staff were wonderful. We could even wash and dry our clothes! There is the best restaurant close by called Chabana that serves amazing Japanese savoury pancakes. We loved everything about Kyoto!
