“Small and cosy, with excellent customer service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

The rooms may be quite small, as well as the common area, but they convey a feeling of calm. The rooms have very big lockers, you can fit a big bagpack in it with no problem. The common area, with its japenese style room (tatami and low tables) is a perfect spot to debrief with other backpackers. The staff is always helpful if you need information, or just a nice chat over Japan or the city of Kyoto. Free coffee, tea and even sake are a plus, as well as the bathroom with bath, a perfect way to decontract after a full day walking between the many wonderful temples of the city.

They give you a blue folder when you check in. It has all the info a traveller could need. Bakery, supermarket, which bus to take where, bars, restaurants, day trips, ideas for itineraries, you name it! The staff are very helpful. One of them (the samurai) helped us wear the traditional clothing. :-)

Excellent location, low price makes this ideal for Kyoto visit.

Really easy location in relation to Kyoto Station, but not really to a lot of the sightseeing in Kyoto. However, the bus system is simple to navigate and there is a subway as well, all easily accessible at Kyoto Station.

Provided some helpful maps of the area. Clean common room with a nice tatami room and a large fridge to use as well. Dorms were clean and I saw people cleaning every day. The zen garden was a nice sight hanging out in the common room as well! They let me keep my bags in the hostel while I did more exploring on the day of my check out.

Only thing about this hostel is it is in an older building and can be very noisy, even if the other guests are trying to be quiet. Footsteps on the floor sound like drum beats. Personally this didn't bother me so much, but if you are sensitive to noise, it might be an issue. I stayed on the first floor so the second floor may have been more quiet.

Tour club is an easy ~7 block walk from the main train station. We arrived at 10am to drop off our luggage so we could start exploring Kyoto. Hide-san checked us in, had excellent English skills, provided us a map with the closest bus stops, restaurants, etc and there was something incredibly restful about talking to him. Lemme just say if you're frazzled you should just spend 2 minutes with Hide-san. He looked like he belonged out raking the zen garden, which he might actually do.

Anyhow, besides the excellent, calming influence of the staff, the rooms are small, meticulously clean, and conveniently arranged. Think cruise ship style size and bathroom with tons of perks - a binder full of info about local things to do/eat/go, TV, airconditioning.

Facilities include a laundry machine (which do cost, but soap is provided free), reasonable pay-as-you-use computers or free wifi, a common room with fridge, table and zen garden.

In our room they had a plug that could be used on the large, incredibly deep bathtub. So if you packed your own soap you could wash all your clothes and there was a clothes drying rack on the small balcony. We stayed in the private rooms which do not have a curfew, but if you are in the dorm bunk-rooms there's a curfew (11:30? Don't hold me to that).

Tour Club was very pleasant, quiet and a great bargain.
