I stayed at Heihachijaya for one night over twenty years ago and I still remember it as one of the most extraordinary places I have ever stayed. (For me it ranks with the Lake Palace hotel in Udaipur, though the two places are hardly comparable; where the Lake Palace is opulent and regal, Heihachijaya is understated and serene.) The hotel has been in the same family for over four hundred years. There is an ancient sauna and bath, a delightful garden, and the guest rooms look out on the river. The kaiseki dinner is served in your room. Ours was exquisite, as was every other aspect of the service here. This is a place for culturally sensitive guests. If you want to party, find a western style hotel somewhere else.
