“Sophisticated and new.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2012

It is a bit of a walk south from Kyoto station but very doable with roller bag or using the subway. Easy to find and safe neighbourood to walk around day and night. The room has everything needed and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The desk is manned 24hours so late checkins are no problem. It is a great hotel at a reasonable price. Free short bike hire or pay for the day. Free internet and coffee in the foyer.
Get the 1 or 2 day Kyoto pass and use the efficient buses and subway to get anywher in the city. It comes with a free transport map, which is easy to follow. The Kyoto Tower is magic at sunset. The Gion district and food markets a must. A very authentic town that has character and sophistication. Many lovely local sights if you choose to walk around the well laid out town.

Room Tip: Ask for non smoking.

The hotel is beautiful! I like how it's different from the typical souless commercial hotel. There were interesting artworks displayed around the reception area.
I stayed in a single room, and it was spacious by Japanese standards! The room was simply and thoughtfully furnished, and clean. There's no WIFI provided in the room, but there's free Wifi on the first floor. Service was also prompt and friendly. I requested for extra towels the first night, and after, the hotel staff remembered and provided the same for the next following nights without further prompting.
The hotel is located near Kujo, which is one stop away from the main Kyoto Station. We found the hotel easily, but it must be said that the hotel is not located in a main tourist area, so there aren't restaurants and convenience stores nearby that remain open past 6pm. We will normally buy our snacks at Kyoto Station (isetan has a supermarket and tempting food halls) before venturing back to the hotel.

Room Tip: We stayed at the top floor (6th) and had a wonderfully high ceiling, that helps in making the room f...

Stayed here for two nights in December 2011. The single room was small-ish but immaculate. The style throughout is kind of "rustic" which I enjoyed. Service was great: I dropped in early at 10AM and left my suitcase at the reception, when I returned to check in the suitcase was already in the room. Reception staff spoke good English. The hotel has an "artsy" feel with exhibitions and lectures by contemporary artists.

Location-wise one could of course do better. The hotel is about 4-5 minutes walk from Kujo underground station (warning - the crossing with North-South Karatsuma-Dori is not labelled with Aketacho, which is the road the hotel is on but with Nishifudanotsujicho, which is the continuation of Aketacho to the east of Karasuma Dori), so in one sense there is no problem. On the other hand there are no major attractions within walking distance and the immediate surrounding is a residential area, and it seems the nearest concentration of restaurants is in the station, which is a good 15 minute walk. This was not enjoyable after a full days' sightseeing (I didn't try the in-hotel restaurant).

i guess this is the kind of place that gets written about in design mags and sites...it was my first stay in a designer/boutique hotel and i must say that it is very well done. this was a dorm earlier but is now converted into a proper hotel with some apartments attached to the property. serious attention to design detail - modern chic but not over the top. the lounge areas are really inviting - couch, books, vending machine. plenty of plants around to soften to concrete/scree finish.

staff is all brisk efficiency. humidifers, iron tables, etc on self serve shelves on each floor. lounge has two internet terminals. laundry room with two washer-dryers - complimentary use with detergent!

location is the only downer and its minor. it is not within walking distance to any kyoto's well-known sights. the neighbourhood can appear grim at first sight. its a 10-minute walk to kyoto station or a 5 minute walk to the subway stop (kujo station) that can connect you to wherever you want to go. there are bus stops as well. if you don't need to be within walking distance of gion, this is probably one of the best options available right now.

the room is very well done. comfortable bedding, lights, television. good clean bathroom, high-quality toiletries. i would definitely stay again.

pro: room is spacious and nicely decorated
GOOD value for money, price is really cheap for what you get
service is very good by the female receptionists who went our of her ways to help us but the front desk man (there's only one AFAIK) can use a little training in hospitality

con:
location is a bit far from the nearest metro station
terrace room can be NOISY as there are two rooms directly above you ! dont get the terrace room unless you are sure there are no one above you.

Room Tip: Dont stay in terrace room

5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2011

The Hotel Anteroom Kyoto is an amazingly fun and quirky new hotel offering in Kyoto. My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 5 nights on our recent honeymoon in Japan. We booked through a web-based travel website that asked if we were on our honeymoon as one of the reservation questions. When we got to the hotel, the front desk agent welcomed us and congratulated us on our recent marriage. She told us that they had upgraded us to their Terrace suite, which is their largest room. We were shocked at how amazing (and BIG) the room was. The room is decorated in minimalist, modern style that really appealed to us. There was also a terrace with table, chairs and planter next to the large window. The bathroom was my husband’s favorite part. It was large and had a Japanese shower and bath inside. The tub was great for soaking and the whole room was the shower when the door was closed which was unique and enjoyable. The AC worked great (which is important in Summer in Japan) and quickly cooled off the room. The room furnishings were high end and all brand new. The hotel also has a free self-operated laundry with free detergent. The public areas and restaurant are pretty stylish yet relaxed as well. There is an art gallery in the lobby that had some very cool works on display while we were there. The neighborhood around the hotel is pretty suburban; there are not a lot of shops or places to eat in the immediate vicinity. However, there is a subway stop less than a 5-minute walk away and you are one stop out of Kyoto Station, the main station in town which bustles with trains, food and things to do.

The best part of our stay at the hotel was the very first night. When we left to go to dinner, the woman at the desk stopped us and asked when we would be back. I was a bit puzzled and asked if there was a curfew (which there sometimes is at hotels in Kyoto). She said there wasn’t, she just wanted to know. It’s also important to add that we were the only non-Japanese staying at the hotel so two big American guys were easy to spot by the hotel staff. When we got back to the hotel after dinner, the same woman at the front desk greeted us with a huge grin and ran to the back. When she returned and gave us our key (in Kyoto you must leave the hotel room key at the front desk when you leave). She said there was a marriage surprise waiting for us in the room. When we got to the room, there was nothing there, but seconds later there was a knock on the door and the hotel manager, a photographer and a waiter were there with a bottle of Champaign and a tray of appetizers and desserts. The came in and wished us a happy marriage and took our photo. We thanked them and enjoyed the rest of our evening. In the morning when we went to the desk to leave our key, the same front desk worker (she must work there a lot!) ran to the back and fetched the manager again who came out with a handmade wedding card with our photo and handmade origami cranes on it. The staff of the hotel had signed it! It was so sweet and thoughtful.

I can’t express how much this meant to us and hospitable everyone was during our stay. The staff is amazingly attentive and friendly; they make you feel really welcome. While this hotel may be a bit off of the beaten path, it is worth a stay here. The surroundings are beautiful and the hotel will put a smile on your face.

Room Tip: Be sure to let them know if you are on your honeymoon!
