Myself and my girlfriend went to Haru Cooking Class yesterday (July 15). We were greeted at a bus stop (the designated meeting point) by Taro and his adorable daughter, Haruko. We walked down to their house and met Taro's wife Yoshiko. They are a lovely and very friendly family!
At the beginning, Taro gave us a good explanation of essential Japenese cooking basics and Kobe beef. We then prepared, with Taro and Yoshiko's help, miso soup, Aemono (cucumber salad), Kinpira (pan fried root vegetables), dashimaki tamago (Japanese omelet). We then cooked premium Kobe beef and vegetable garnish.
Apart from the class being lots of fun, this was also one of the best meals I have ever had. I particularly liked the miso soup, Kinpira, And the Kobe beef with garnishing. The Kobe was cooked perfectly and is the best beef I've had (along with premium Hida beef in Takayama). The garnishing (Japanese peppers and enoki(?) mushrooms) with the beef was cooked in the residue Kobe fat in the pan. The mushrooms were absolutely divine...
You also receive a copy of the recipes used in the class to take home and try yourself, and you can take photos while you're preparing the food.
If in Kyoto, you simply must go to the Haru Cooking Class.
Thank you Taro, Yoshiko and Haruko!
