“Traditional Kyoto, luxurious style”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2012

I spent a weekend in Kyoto as a getaway from Tokyo during a recent month-long visit to Japan. Wow, I never wanted to leave the room. It was absolutely gorgeous, merging the best of traditional ryokans with the luxury touches for western comfort. The futon mattress was the most comfortable night's sleep of my life. I loved the tatami mats and the paper screens. It was complete serenity, especially watching a lightning storm through the paper screens. The bath had a fantastic shower and a traditional cypress soaking tub. The restaurant even surpassed the room. I had an incredible many-course meal, and each plate was more delicious than the former. And, amazingly, the music mix they played in the restaurant was out of this world - an eclectic mix of western indy music and jazz covers. This ryokan/hotel was the Japanese hospitality experience you dream of.

Room Tip: Spring for the larger suite to enjoy a tatami sitting room.

We recently stayed in the Actus room at Hotel Kanra. We had just spent 2 nights in a Ryokan, so it was a nice change to walk into a such a modern space. This is best described as a luxury hotel with a boutique feel about it. It was clean, comfortable and modern - but you still know you're in Japan. The perfect combination.

There was lots of space and everything we wanted. It's only 5mins to the main station so is a perfect base of you are planning on exploring some of Kyoto's sights that require you to jump on a JR train. You don't need a taxi if you have a small/med roller case and don't mind a walk.

The staff were amazing. We were thinking about going fishing for the day at Lake Biwa and the front desk did everything from print directions to researching fishing supply shops. We couldn't have asked for anything more.

If you like modern boutique hotels - this is a great place to stay. We stayed 3 nights here and 2 in a ryokan in Gion and it was a great combination to experience Kyoto.

This has to be one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. The level of customer service and the design of the rooms, everything was just perfect to us.

I wasn’t quite sure what kind of power plugs they use in this hotel so I emailed them 2 weeks before I left the UK and I have got a reply within hours to advise me they had the 2 pin plugs (not with the earthed facility) so it’ll be important for me not to bring the 3 pin plugs over. Since I wrote the email in Japanese (via Google translate) they must have figured it out the following day and sent me another email to apologise the English speaking staff was away yesterday and wrote me a very detailed email in English. I was not expecting that as some of the hotels I have emailed didn’t even bother to reply!

When we arrived to check in the room has been upgraded because of our room package and when we got to the room it was just amazing. It was big with a living room area and massive bed, authentic Japanese design rooms with a modern touch. Bathroom and the shower and basins were all in different areas so you can have someone using the shower as well as the other person using the toilet and washing their faces all at the same time.

I know quite a lot of Japanese culture and I was really excited to see how they could embody the traditional Japanese elements into a hotel room. For example, the little front gate where you can leave your shoes outside (and you can lock the gate to ensure your shoes would still be there in the morning) and the giant wooden bath tub. Everything was like a dream for us.

Hotel was equipped with Wi-Fi facilities on all floors and an ice and vending machine on the 4th floor. It was right off the main street out of the Kyoto Station so it is possible to walk but if you have a lot of luggage getting a taxi would be the smart thing to do.

The service at this hotel was even better than some of the 6 stars hotels in Tokyo in my opinion. After our breakfast we have decided to go out to see how heavy the rain was and within 1 minute the staff came running out with two umbrellas and said we could use them if we want to go out. We didn’t even ask the front desk if we could borrow any umbrellas or giving them any hints we were going out. Aren’t they extremely thoughtful or what?

It was a shame we were only staying for 1 night in Kyoto because if I knew the hotel was going to be this wonderful I would have stayed here for much longer. It was like a utopia in the centre of Kyoto.

It was still raining by the time we left and the staff offers us to keep the umbrellas from the hotel (even though we wouldn’t be able to return those later), it was really sweet of them but we had decided to walk in the rain as it wasn’t too far from the subway station.

Overall, we will definitely stay here again and next time it will be at least couple of nights rather than just one night!

Room Tip: Get a superior room to experience what a traditional Japanese room is like

The accommodations and the staff at Hotel Kanra exceeded our expectations. After long days of sightseeing, returning to the hotel was like returning to our own personal spa. Very convenient location. Overall, we were pleased with our stay (especially at such a reasonable price). Highly recommend!

Spent a week in Japan, 2 nights Tokyo, 2 nights Osaka and then 2 nights at the Kanra in Kyoto. In hindsight, I should have started in Kyoto because it was a stand out for my trip and you need at least 4+ days to really explore this amazing province. The Kanra made me feel at home from the minute I walked in. The reception staff were quick to get me settled and assisted me in starting my exploration of the surrounds. It is clean, rooms are big for Japan, awesome interior design and functional layouts. You have a modernistic/minimalistic style that gets you in the mood for a true japanese experience. I made full use of the free rental bikes to get around. Kyoto is very bike friendly so if you want to explore at your own pace then I truely recommend it. I applaude the staff for their genuine and empathetic customer service. Sadly I could not extend one more night because it was fully booked out!! Yes the mini bar is empty, but next door is a 7 Eleven so just fill it yourself at half the price. The only issue I had was with the over head shower head, which looks great but definitely not as good as using the hand shower. I will be back soon, I hope they have rooms available!!

Room Tip: Some rooms face the street so if you don't like traffic noise in early evening (before 10pm), th...

Fantastic boutique hotel with exceptional attention to detail. We had a japanese style room with a tatami mat living area, huge double queen bed with quality linen and large timber bath tub. Superb quality finishes throughout the entire hotel.

Japan is famous for its great service but this hotel was a standout. Staff were exceptional, providing excellent restaurant recommendations, printing off maps of coin laundries for us, giving us free umbrellas as we were leaving due to the rain, seamless checkin.....how every quality hotel should be run.

The only negative was that there was not enough light in the room for the other half to do her make-up. Small gripe, certainly not a deal breaker just an issue to be aware of.

Would definitely book here again when returning to Kyoto.

Room Tip: Just book any room, you can't go wrong.

We loved this wonderful boutique hotel in Kyoto. It was conveniently located near the station which means you need a taxi for exploring Gion and other parts of the city but as taxis were not expensive, we were really glad to stay at the Kanra. We had a really big room with a huge comfortable bed. I loved the big wooden Japanese bathtub and there was a nice separate shower as well. There's no minibar in the room, but there is a standard Japanese vending machine in the hotel for buying water and other drinks. So that was actually nice - a bottle of water at a reasonable price for a change. The service was excellent and overall this hotel was much better than the expensive chain hotel we used in Tokyo. Also, I highly recommend the cute little Cafe Sarasin, one block north for tasty buckwheat crepes and pastries.

Thank you so much for choosing our hotel to stay with.
As you say, there is no mini bar provided in the rooms, but a small fridge to store your goods. This 24/7 operating convenience store just around the corner could also be very handy for stocking up snacks and beverages as you need, and the cafe you mentioned is still one of our favorite stop-bys. We look forward to welcoming and serving you, next time. Thank you.
