“Great people”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2012

Had about 5 nights here in May 2012.

The positive:
- Run by awesome people.
- Amazing house.
- Had a great time hanging out with the staff and other guests.

The negative:
- Location, If you are on the JR pass it's a bit of a walk from the closet station.
- The rooms have rather thin walls, so if you want early nights and don't want to hang out with everyone else this probably isn't the place for you.

Overall I had a good time here and would recommend it for a great Japanese experience.

If you're ever lost like how we were on the first day, ask which hostel has a dog and the directions should send you to Hostel Mundo.

My friends and I really enjoyed staying in Hostel Mundo. It's close to bus stops that took us around Kyoto like Ginkakuji, Gion, and Heian Jinja. If you have any questions, feel free to ask Yuya-san, the owner, and he'll be more than happy to ask.

The facilities were excellent; my friends and I loved our sleeping arrangements, and the beds and futons were very warm and comfy. There's also a small kitchenette where we had our meals while sitting next to the heater waiting for the shower to be free.

Note that there is only 2 toilets, one urinal, and one shower, so you'll need to take turns when showering. The walk to the toilet can be really cold at night in early spring, so make sure you wear socks before stepping out. Share the shower. There's a small whiteboard next to the shower door, so write your name down and take turns.

Besides the limited facilities (which I could live with), everything else about Hostel Mundo was excellent!

Room Tip: Make early reservations and when you can, choose the futon options in early spring.

the staff here can really take care of you, in many times were help a lot! they're also travel many times. i stay here around 2 weeks, quite clean, good atmosphere, traditional japanese house, located at the center of this ancient city, close to supermarket, Onsen, also bus station which i'd say it's the best way to travel around Kyoto, and it's always nice to have a cup of hot tea anytime you want. one of my best stay :)

Really nice stay here. If you want a stay in a traditional Japanese home then this is it. Make sure you print off the directions they give you on the website from the JR station; once you walk it once you will be fine. The guys here are so nice, shame we didn't get to chat with them much as we were asleep or out and about taking in Kyoto life. Just be careful if you are 6"4, I headbutted quite a few beams walking around :P

Hostel Mundo provides more than just a comfortable and relaxing shelter. The house is a well looked after traditional Kyoto town house with many lovely details. The owner was incredibly friendly and helpful. Having a communal kitchen and living room means guests can interact with each other.

Excellent value for money for the great experience. Will definitely stay again!

(P.S. Traditional Japanese house does imply the walls are made with paper which is not the best noise-resisting material, just be mindful if you choose to stay in the female dorm)

I had a lovely stay here last year. I was travelling alone but met some new friends at Hostel Mundo when I joined in the gyoza party that was happening on the first night I arrived. The owner is really friendly and helpful. Next time I go to Kyoto I will definitely stay there again.
