“Pleasant surprise on Pontocho”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

After walking up and down Pontocho for 1 hour trying to find a restaurant listed on Lonely Planet, we finally gave up and looked at the menu for Mimasuya. Looked interesting so we decided to go in. We were seated upstairs overlooking the water. The food was just as good as it sounded on the menu - fried eggplant balls, crispy fried pumpkin and chicken, marinated tuna, even the grilled soybeans were good. The dessert was to die for - Chocolate banana mousse and chocolate cake. The dishes were smaller, somewhat like tapas, but delicious, innovated and affordable.

“Excellent food with VERY reasonable prices”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2013

Great find in Kyoto. Great ambiance- looks like a very nice and modern restaurant. Went with a large group of friends and everyone enjoyed their meals. Prices are very reasonable and the quality of the food was very good as well. Service was great. They take credit cards (which is rare at some restaurants) and have a wide selection of dishes. Option for traditional and Western seating. Would recommend to a friend.

“Great Food at good prices”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012

There is an English menu available so it is easy to order, the staff are helpful, and the food was really tasty. We had the Chicken in Wasabi sauce, and the Leek wrapped in Beef with Garlic sauce. Bothe were excelent, and with a bowl of rice, it was enough for dinner. Bothe dishes were under 1000 Yen, so with a view overlooking the river, this seemed like excellent value.

A lot of Japanese restaurants can be quite scary for westerners, but this one is very easy to navigate.

“great restaurant in the heart of Kyoto - and English is spoken”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

My husband and I loved this authentic modern Japanese restaurant: the location on Pontocho with its terrace overlooking the river is unbeatable, the food (there is a menu in English and English is spoken by the staff) is very tasty and the service was efficient and friendly. Every dish we had was excellent - and we did not notice any particular delays mentioned by the previous reviewer. Mind you - we were not in a rush: the outdoor terrace is a lovely spot where one wants to linger on a warm summer's night. There were no other foreigners dining at that time and the place was quite full - so not a tourist trap. If you are lucky, from the terrace you might spot a geisha entertaining clients over tea next door, as we did!
