“Good for foreigners visiting Kyoto”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2012

As a foreigner it can be difficult to find a restaurant with an english language menu in Kyoto. Whilst it is easy to eat in the international hotels, it is more fun to visit places where the locals go to. For any visitor to Kyoto a pre-dinner walk thru PONTOCHO in the heart of the city is a must. A long, small alley full of local restaurants. Here I recommend you eat at MIMASUYA. The menu is in English, the staff speaks a bit of english, the food is great, the prices are reasonable and you will find yourself amidst lots of local people enjoying a night out. I enjoyed the avocado/shrimp salad and the beef tenderloin with three sauces. However, the highlight is the banana - chocolate mousse dessert - absolutely delightful. Staff throughout the restaurant is very friendly and helpful. I can recommend this restaurant highly.

“delicious food, great view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2011

They were very welcoming of us, even though we were running a bit late for our reservation (and had children with us). We had the appetizer sampler which gave us a bite of a bunch of different things-- I think the fresh tofu was my favorite bite. Of the main plates, I liked the steak with three sauces and the seabream "carpaccio" the best. My sons picked at the chicken teriyaki and ate rice. Oh well.

View is of the river, but you must enter on the small road parallel to the riverfront -- you can't get to the restaurant from the river side.

“Excellent and affordable modern Japanese food in Pontocho”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2010

We expected a trendy nightlife area like Pontocho to have only very expensive restaurants, but our excellent dinner at Mimasuya was surprisingly affordable, about half of what we’d paid for a less satisfying shabu-shabu dinner in Gion. The restaurant is in a great location with a view of the Kamo River. The food is modern Japanese, a sort of “fusion” cuisine. The servings are a little larger than tapas, which gave us the chance to sample several dishes – the two of us shared four, each delicious, plus appetizers, rice, and plum wine, and the total bill was only about $60. They had an English menu; though it was sometimes a bit mysterious, we regretted none of our choices. Highly recommended. It’s about halfway between Sanjo and Shijo, on the river-side of the street just south of a park.
