“Great location and value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2014

We have stayed at this hotel several times and the place continues to be a great value in a great location in Kyoto. The rooms are clean and well maintained. The mini kitchen is a big plus as we typically use the microwave oven and dishes provided. The room size is slightly larger than average than typical Japanese hotels. The hotel provides free WiFi throughout its facility. There is a coin operated laundry room downstairs. There is no exercise room. I have always been able to get receptionists who speak English. The hotel is located conveniently a few blocks from the Kyoto station and also next to the Gojo station of the subway system. There are numerous restaurants and convenience stores in the area and it is waking distance to places like Nishiki market and Gion. Shijo street, where a lot of shopping establishments are located, is also nearby.
Overall, this is a highly recommended hotel with good prices if you are not looking for a full service hotel.

A reasonable hotel but surprising to see it so highly ranked given there are some definite drawbacks.

The biggest issue we had was with the lack of knowledge from front desk staff. They provided an inaccurate timetable for the Haruka trains to Kansai Airport (important times are right so as to ensure you don't miss flight), had limited knowledge on how to get to major tourist attractions and, generally, were not proactive in responding to queries. For example, it was only on the day of departure we found out that you can get a local bus map and day passes at the nearby subway station. This was in spite of questions we had asked the previous day on bus travel options.

The breakfast definitely isn't worth paying for; small selection of lukewarm items. Head to the charming Teramachi-dori for lovely French-style bakeries.

Whilst Kyoto is a great city for walking, the Citadines is about a 30 minute walk from the bustling heart of the city (Gion, Sanjo-dori etc).

All that said, the rooms are of a good size and perfectly comfortable for a short stay in this amazing city. Just make sure you do plenty of your own research and don't expect to get too much support from the front desk staff.

We stayed at Citadines Kyoto from May 30-June 4, 2014. They had sent us directions from the train station to give to the taxi driver that were in Japanese. We handed these to the driver and literally a few minutes later we arrived at the hotel. Check in was a breeze. Our room was a studio which was perfect for the two of us. While the hotel is not a 5 star hotel, it was spotlessly clean and enabled us to cook some of our meals to save more money. Some advice though: there is a Fresco grocery store to the left as you exit the building but it is small and not very clean. We found another one to the right of the hotel, about 4 blocks down which was much bigger, more selection and much cleaner. The hotel staff were able to give good directions on places we wanted to go and overall we would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone heading to Tokyo that wants to save money for touring and the ability to cook some of your own meals. Thank you Citadine staff.

Room Tip: We were happy with our room on the 8th floor looking out on the city street.

This property always scores highly with reviewers.
We have wanted to visit Kyoto for five years now. Every year I have done my pre-trip research and every year Citadines makes my short list of potential places to stay.
Finally...in March we went to Fabulous Kyoto and stayed at this property for 8 nights. We also spent our first 4 nights at the Granvia in Kyoto station (much more $$ per night)

I am happy to confirm that the location is fantastic for public transportation, 7-11 for ATM cash and room snacks, Japanese quality fast food (think Coco Curry), and morning coffee (McDonald's).

I was concerned about the room furniture having an "Ikea look" in the photos. No worry here. Seating was comfortable and so were the beds. The kitchenette was complete, though we used it very little. Still. It was nice to have a cold Kirin or Sapporo waiting in the room after a day on the town.

I am pleased to add my endorsement to the long list of positive reviews this "business" hotel deserves the ratings. If you are on an expense account or just can't do without room service, then stay at the Granvia. If you would rather spend your travel dollar enjoying a wonderful, albeit expensive city.....this is your place.

We had no issue at all.

The subway is right outside and there is some good food in the vicinity, so good location too.

They also provide some useful kitchen appliances. Overall, great stay and would stay here again.

I stayed in this hotel for a total of 6 nights in April 2014.

The Room itself is the biggest i stayed for Business type of hotel. There are even cooking areas inside the room.

This hotel is located at Gojo which is one metro station away from Kyoto Station. It will take 15 mins of walking.

Overall, it is pretty value for money during non peak season. However, I find that their peak season prices are quite excessive (3x rates of non-peak).

Furthermore, they charges room rates based on room instead of the number of person staying in the room. (My room cost the same regardless 1 or 2 person staying). In most Japanese Hotels, they tends to charge by the number of person staying. Therefore, for solo traveller it would make more sense to stay in Japanese hotel rather than Citadines.

We recently stayed in Citadines for a week, and we are highly satisfied with the room and services provided. First of all, the hotel is located just outside Gojo station. Its unique and distinct architecture helps you in recognizing the hotel. The building still looks new and the ambiance is very minimalist. The check-in process is fairly quick and efficient. We were allowed to check in around noon time even though the official time is not until 2pm.

The studio with double bed looks EXACTLY as it is pictured on their website! The room is clean, and everything looks like it is very well maintained (furnitures, appliances, bathroom, etc.) The hotel also has a laundry facility downstairs (~$2 for washing and ~$1 yen for 30 min drying.) This feature is certainly a plus and is very convenient for the guest, esp. if you do not want to carry many clothes during your trip. The hotel also offers breakfast for ~$5 yen with selections of sausage, egg, steamed vegetable, cereal, congee, pancake, juices.

In terms of location, you can take the Karasuma line from Kyoto station to Gojo station or opt for a walk (20 minutes or so depending on your walking speed). In addition, main city buses stop at the intersection of Karasuma dori and Gojo dori. For example, if you want to take city bus to go to Kinkakuji/Ryoanji, you can easily take no. 101 and to go to Ginkakuji, you can easily take no. 17.

For convenience store, the 7/11 is just located across the street. You can buy Onigiri for $1 if you prefer not to have breakfast in the hotel. There is a nice buffet place (Kamo) in a close distance serving local vegetables (there are also some few non-vegetarian dishes); this place is affordable and opens for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It gets very crowded quickly so you will need to come early.

Overall, Citadines Karasuma-Gojo has been a great "home away from home" for us. :)
