“Highly recommend it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013 via mobile

Fun, casual, good food, great service. It took us a while to find it as we were using the map on Tripadvisor Kyoto City Guide - the location was incorrect; in the end we googled it. Well worth the effort though!

“Kyoto gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013

What a fantastic little restaurant where the owner/chef cooks your choice of food on a stone rock plate right in front of you. Extremely friendly atmosphere, great little romantic seeing. It's located in a corner around Pontocho area, and even though we were there on a winter rainy night, we could sense how lovely this would be in autumn or spring. There could have been a bit more choice of meats on the menu, but we had one of the chefs recommended sets and it was just delicious. two insights: be prepared to merry very interesting people around the cosy counter (we were the first pakistanis to ever have eaten there, and there were some other interesting folks around us that night); and expect you're clothing to carry the smell of the charcoal food ...it was fabulous, a must go for anyone visiting Kyoto to try something with a twist.

“Do you want to narrow your wardrobe?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013 via mobile

Agree on other reviews, with 2 caveats:
1. Portions are a bit stingy (1prawn?.....)
2. You will leave the place stinking like a skunk...... Your clothes will smell badly even after one full night in the wind.... The first thing you will do back at the hotel is a shower, guaranteed!
Does the experience of eating out (..... and in Japan?) need to be like this? NO, IT DOES NOT

“Nothing wrong, nothing awesome...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2012

Nice dinner, nice service, nothing to complain about.

However we felt that there was nothing particularly special about this place. Went along based on trip advisor rating of #3 restaurant in Kyoto, we don't understand how it got this rating, and were therefore somewhat underwhelmed... If this is the best Kyoto can do, we'd be very surprised!!
