Well, chef-owner, artist, designer, uber-cool Hiroshi Ujita's A_WOMB gets pretty close. Journeying there is like a pilgrimage to a Zen retreat tucked in north-eastern foothills of Kyoto (30 minutes from downtown). Even with the assistance of a taxi driver, locating it was not easy with only the smallest of signs discretely signaling its presence. Our presumptuous lack of a reservation didn't help but were still warmly received and told we had to wait. Undeterred we dug in for what was expected to be no less than an hour - undoubtedly worth it! We spent the time 'meditating' on the carefully selected merchandise displayed in the studio.
There are probably not enough superlatives to describe the cuisine here. Literally single-handedly crafted by the chef and his trustworthy assistant (who doubled up as waiter and busboy), this is the epitome of 'slow food'. Make sure you have enough time to partake. We took two orders of the "limited" set (all that was left of the 2000JPY lunches) an order each of the tempura and curry sets (less than 1000JPY).
Remarkably inexpensive for the extreme quality & meticulous treatment. We were flabbergasted with the attention to details, details, details. The compositions were virtual pieces of art. The ingredients though simple - tuna, salmon, eggplant, chicken, summer vegetables, miso, peppers, fragrant herbs were completely transformed in such masterful hands. Even the modest desserts become sweet masterpieces.
At the end Hiroshi was absolutely gracious when he apologized for 'keeping us waiting'. Having called a taxi to return us to the city, he bowed & bade us goodbye from the sidewalk until we disappeared from view. What an experience!
