“Fantastic vegetarian gem in Kyoto!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

As confirmed vegetarians we were getting by on scraps and leftovers till we chanced upon this gem! For the first time we ate with the confidence that stock up, the food conformed to vegetarian standards.

As others have pointed out, it is a small place, and assaults the senses when you first enter, but a very charming place. The food is cooked right in front of you as you wait, and the three of us had different dishes in our set lunches! Made for a great sharing experience.

Great value for money and highly recommended.

“Quirky and cool”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2013

For a thousand yen the set menu is both great value and delicious. The restaurant (more of a front room of the owners's house) is very un-Japanese; it's packed to the roof with cat artwork, books,CDs..not to mention a rather cute cat. The clientele (there's only room for ten people sitting at the bar) are a mixture of locals and tourists - we were treated to a jazz piano session by one of the the locals and some acoustic rock by another whilst chatting with a charming you h lady who wanted to practice her English.. We were kept entertained!

The food is strictly vegetarian - no dashi in the Mizo soup, no egg and no dairy products used on the food. Our set dinners were slightly different so we shared and tried each others.

Recommended for vegetarians and anyone who fancies eating somewhere a little different

“Brilliant, tiny place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2013 via mobile

I loved this restaurant! As other people have said it is tricky to find without directions so it helps to look it up online first. Once you walk down the tiny alleyway it does feel like you are walking into someone's house but you are in the right place! It is very small but great food and well worth searching out. The food is cooked in front of you and is great whether you are vegetarian or not. I can't recommend this place enough, this was my favorite place we ate in Japan

“Excellent vegetarian food in interesting surroundings”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013 via mobile

Vegetarian food isnt easy to come by in Japan so we were very happy to find Mikoan. We ordered two vegetarian sets which were 1000yen each but each set was different and we were told to share. The food was cooked in front of us and was delicious.

The setting is unusual. You enter through a small alleyway and enter a normal looking house. On the otherside of the door the room was crammed with books, trinkets, musical instruments and posters on the ceiling. Forties music was playing in the background. You sit at a bar and order and the other guests were very friendly. The owner has a very cute cat which is shy but gorgeous and will let you stroke her.

Although it is tucked away we followed the directions writen in a previous review and found it easily. There is a handwritten sign that says vegetarian bar at the entrance to the alleyway.

Highly recommended even if you are not vegetarian.
