“Secret Sanctuary”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2013

We spent three nights here & very much enjoyed the experience. I would describe it as a sort of Western style ryokan, mainly because of the personal touch & the beautiful furnishings. The eclectic mix of lampshades, curtains & furniture resulted in a stunning effect. The staff were so helpful & gave us so much information. They made bookings for us in advance of our stay & recommended places to eat, all of which turned out perfectly. We stayed in the Wind room which was lovely & bright, was spotlessly clean & had just about everything we needed. A nice view of the stream below too. The breakfasts are tasty & plentiful & the freshly baked bread a real treat. Best of all we enjoyed happy 'two hours' when we got a chance to sit back & reflect on the day's activities with a nice glass of something!! It was good to speak to fellow travellers too & to staff at this time. At the end of our stay we felt like we had become good 'mates'! The staff were so helpful & we enjoyed taking tea in the lounge..... however, it would have made our stay even more spectacular had we had a kettle in the room - we do so enjoy that morning cup of tea in bed!!!!

Room Tip: The Wind rooms are delightful - nice & bright with a view of the stream below.

We stayed here in early May on our honeymoon, we stayed in the Butterfly room which was very romantic with dark walls and a glass wall looking into the shower. The room felt like it had a personality. The hotel was very well appointed and felt very luxurious.

The staff were so kind and helpful from the start and they treated you like friends, offering tips and chatting with us about kyoto and our trip. They had a happy hour each evening when they offer drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) for free, they also take time to chat to guests and offer advice about where to go in the evening.

The breakfast was lovely. Home baked breads, fresh fruit, soup, fruit juice and a boiled egg which kept us going for the morning.

They so helpful offering directions, good recommendations for things to do and places to eat. I mentioned that it was my birthday while we were staying there and wanted somewhere special to eat, they found us somewhere and booked it for us. Just as we were about to leave they brought me a cake and sang happy birthday!!

It was those kind of touches were what made our stay so special, they went way above the expectations for service and hospitality and it is a place that we will always have fond memories of. If we ever get to go back to Kyoto this is the only place we will stay. Thank you to everyone at Hotel Mume!!

Room Tip: The butterfly room was lovely and romantic so ideal for couples.

Wow where to begin... First of all, the rooms are beautiful. Everything you'll ever need is in your hotel room and the staff are willing to help you every step of the way. In fact, they go above and beyond what's asked of them to help you out. They provided us with valuable suggestions on where to visit in Kyoto and helped us look up and print out directions. We also purchased the breakfast option and they served some delicious western breakfast option! We loved it so much we even blogged about our experience there: http://skinnychopsticks.com/hotel-mume/ I would highly recommend this place to anyone staying there. Mind you, it is a bit pricey but you're definitely getting what you pay for. We stayed in the Flower (Sakura) Room which is the only suite in the hotel. Comes with a nice balcony for you to relax and chill outside and get a nice view. Be sure to check out their Happy Hour where they provide guests with free alcoholic beverages such as wine and sake!

This hidden little hotel is incredible. From the moment we walked in until we were being waved goodbye to in the cab, amazing. The owner and her staff are the most gracious and helpful people we have met. The room was great, overlooking the little river. Amenities abound. The breakfasts were terrific with their homemade croissants, breads, jams, and yogurt! (That's just the homemade food!) there was also fresh fruit, eggs and soup! You can't go wrong here! Book early!!

Room Tip: Go for the wind rooms!

Our three night stay at Mume was a true pleasure. Even before our arrival, Yoshie & Miyzuki went out of their way to help with travel plans. On arrival, our reception was warm and most welcoming. The entire staff is attentive, helpful and always happy to take the time to answer any question. Every recommendation was a hit, whether for a restaurant, or a sight to see. The room was clean, comfortable and ever need was anticipated. The breakfast was outstanding, and Happy Hour a nice time to check in & get information. Thank you Horita and all of the incredible staff for a very memorable stay! The Nygards

Room Tip: We enjoyed the Wind room, with a view to the stream & street. It was bright and very quiet.

We thoroughly enjoyed staying here and would recommend this hotel to anyone and everyone. I know our agent said you have to book early when bookings open, and, in our case this was November for a May booking the following year. The result was we had a beautiful room on the third floor and it was the second largest I believe. I know the hotel is not cheap, but the attention to detail and quality of service is second to none. The Hotel is recently built and therefore outstanding quality has been incorporated. As in common with many Japanese properties, the entrance is discreet, so passing by the front door, and not realising it is a hotel, is easy. Once you are safely inside the quality of the beds, bathrooms, breakfast and "happy hour" are brilliant. The staff make this Hotel extra special too.

We had two small double beds in our room which gave an excellent night's sleep. The bathroom had the most amazing loo with a control panel so your every wish could be catered for! Our room was the "Wind" room and I would highly recommend this room if you cannot get the suite.

Breakfast was completely to our taste. After somewhat average breakfasts elsewhere, this was a real treat. We had rolls, home-made soup (wonderful), croissants, jam, cereals, egg, choice of coffees, tea, and best of all, the freshest of fruit salad with optional yoghurt. The coffee machine was a Nespresso, so we could even choose the coffee we like at home! Happy Hour was an opportunity every evening to discuss and book dining options and sort out sightseeing plans for the following day. We noticed that the Hotel tends to attract a younger clientele but I would recommend it for all age groups. There is a lift and the hotel is well positioned for many restaurants.

All the restaurant recommendations were spot on and totally enjoyable. We were often back in the latter half of happy hour (it is in fact 2 hours) but we were still happily included in the end of day discussions and planning. Maps of the local area are printed out as necessary and photos of your chosen restaurant too, as signage in Japan is VERY discreet. Sightseeing can be tiring in Kyoto and often take longer than you think. Returning to the Mume in the evening provided a real oasis of calm and the drinks offered were extremely welcome. We stayed at the Mume for 5 nights and even then felt we had not done everything we wanted to accomplish in Kyoto. Try and stay as long as possible to get the full benefit of this city and all it has to offer. It is definitely a top destination in Japan and this Hotel is surely one of the best to stay in.

Room Tip: Ask for the Wind Room, or the Suite

There can't possibly be any better small hotel to stay in, anywhere! The attention the staff pays to each guest is personal, yet not intrusive. Along with the owner, they are all extremely gracious, and treat you like family. They are there to make your stay the best part of the Kyoto experience, and they certainly do! The breakfast served each morning is out of this world. The rooms are beautifully appointed with gorgeous antiques, modern bathrooms and beautiful wood floors. You feel as though you are in the lap of luxury while staying here. The location of the Mume is perfect, tucked away on a small side street yet near everything. I've stayed there on two trips to Japan, and my daughter has stayed there for six years in a row, since they first opened. The Mume is worth the trip to Kyoto.
