I spent five nights at Hotel Mume as part of a larger Asian trip. What strikes me most is their concern for the guest, which is demonstrated in several ways. First, the design of the hotel maximizes guest comfort. For example, the doors are built so that it's impossible to slam them--thus you won't hear any loud bangs--and the walls are insulated so you won't hear noise from the hallway. Second, the owner and the staff really care about the comfort and enjoyment of their guests.
The breakfasts are exceptional. I particularly enjoyed the home baked breads, the freshly made jams in various unusual flavors, and the fine coffee. When I returned from touring in the afternoon, I was always welcomed with tea, coffee or an alcoholic beverage.
The staff were happy to suggest places to visit or interesting restaurants of various sorts. To say that they are concerned about your experience would be an understatement. They are justifiably proud of their beautiful, historic city and they want you to enjoy your time in Kyoto.
If I had to describe the experience, perhaps I'd say it's like staying at the home of your wealthy Japanese cousins (really nice, helpful cousins), because they treat you like family.
There is a reason why Hotel Mume is rated number 1. I stayed in large, super luxury hotels for the rest of my Asia trip, and my thoughts keep going back to the people at Mume. I hope you stay there and enjoy your visit as much as I did.
