“Wondering about the Unesco criteria”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2013

500 yen entry fee during autumn leaves season, another 600 yen to the 1 lone Japanese tiny building with the oldest manga (the Unesco World Heritage Site). We didnt pay to enter this as it just looks like not much to pay 600 yen for.

Took us 30 min to finish walking around, without entering the Unesco designated site. Autumn leaves not quite there yet. Disappointed.

“Overrated”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

There's a steep entry fee of 500 yen to the grounds and another 600 yen to see the so called first Japanese manga. Overrated because it's just a couple of old buildings - many of which you can't enter, that's strewn around a forest. The buildings are old but are not stunning structurally. The so called first Japanese manga is also a waste of money. There are all but 3 scrolls which depict animals/manga. The funniest is the so-called tea garden. It's the oldest in Japan and it's located behind the toilet. No one would have noticed it if it weren't for the sole stone slab with Kanji words saying it's the oldest Japanese tea garden.
