“Basic Hostel style accomodation, with a welcoming owner”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2010

This was the most basic accomodation we stayed in, but it was functional with friendly staff. Our room was clean but very basic, and next to the shower and kitchen which wasn't ideal. The internet and common room area (with info on where to go and what to do) were good, but like everything it was a bit too compact for the number of people.
It listed a free breakfast, but be clear this was limited to 'one slice of bread per person' so don't expect to fill up for your day ahead.
We were very lucky that a Maiko visited during our stay to celebrate the anniversary of the opening. This made it extra special, and again showed the wish of the owner to share Kyotos traditions with us.

Kyoto itself has so much to offer, that you will never have enough time there. Inari is well worth a visit, and the golden temple was very spectacular. Be warned the buses will be heaving, although the travel pass is excellent value. We used it as a base for Hiroshima, Okayama, Kobe and others, and this worked very well

The owner is very friendly and helpful, the place is clean. Feels very much like homestay.
The only issue is the poor soundproof system between rooms. The guests have move light and talk soft in the room.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2009

We stayed 6 nights at this guesthouse during our japan trip and had a very nice experience there. The place is located at the corner of Nishinotoin and Gojo dori bus stop. This gave us easy access to bus routes going to kyoto station, Gion and Pontocho district. The staff is more than willing to help you and they also have a poster explaining how to go to the major attractions by bus from the hostel.

We had a very large private japanese room, access to a small kitchen and a living room and two computers equipped with internet access. For breakfast, you could make yourself toast with jam , tea and coffee but could also buy something from the convenience store very near and store it in the small fridge. It was calm at night because they asked everyone to keep quiet between 11 pm and 7 am but there was hopefully no curfew. Also, everything was clean and smoking was not permitted inside.

The only bad point is that they have only one shared shower room but it was never a problem considering we woke up at 7 to enjoy the day in Kyoto. It is not really a hotel, more a very very high end hostel so, you have to bring your towels or pay a big ; ) 100 yens (around one dollar) to rent one. There is also a washer/dryer you could use for a small fee.

A nice, friendly and affordable place to rest while in Kyoto.
