“Value for price, Great and cosy place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2013

It was a last minute decision to stay in Kyoto and I am glad to have booked Hanakiya for my trip. We have booked 2 rooms and the rooms were surprisingly spacious as we have heard many stories of the small rooms in Japan. We had our rooms on the first floor and there were only 3 rooms in the building. We did not see the other guests often and it feel like we have booked an apartment to ourselves. Since there were only 3 rooms in the building, there is no inconvenience at all for sharing toilet and bathroom. It is also near eatery places since it is near Kiyomizu temple so no problem in getting food during day time. The only flaw is the guesthouse is a bit far from bus stop and subway station. It is dark and feel isolated when returning at night so suggest ladies not to go alone at night. On the whole, it is a wonderful experience and I will definitely consider Hanakiya should I return to Kyoto.

We spent two nights at Hanakiya Inn before moving on to another city. The owner has two houses which not far from each other. We shared the house with another 2 groups of travelers (but we don't have a chance to meet them). It located in a very quiet area, comfortable room, and most important the place is very clean, tidy and safe. Kiyomizudera temple, restaurants and places of attraction are within walking distance. This is the first time for us to sleep on tatami, very interesting. Bus stop just less than 10 mins walks.

We spent two nights in the latter part of June 2013 at this quaint locale, the traditional Jpanese room was nice, quite and the inn location is very near to some of the best attractions in Kyoto. The temples, Gion district, good shopping and dinning. Eimi was very nice and she provided us with helpful information on places to see and good restaurants within walking distance.

Booked here for a couple of nights. Hanakiya Inn more than met my expectations. Located in a very quiet area, very comfortable room, bathrooms very clean and well set-out. walking distance to the Kiyomizudera temple. Stayed at the Annexe. Continental breakfast was substantial. Would definitely stay here again. Highly recommended.

We stayer at the annex, very nice and clean, and location is great, Eimi was really nice ( I loved her dog BTW), not fancy place at all but really good. Also she was very helpfull and gave us lots of indications to travel, we also bought some yukatas at a really good price! I will recommend this place if you want to have a Japanese style hotel

Room Tip: I was with my parents and didn't want to be on the 2nd floor or more, so if you want to be close...

My husband and I along with another couple stayed here in early April. I chose Hanakiya because of the reviews and its proximity to Kiyomizudera, which is my favorite temple in all of Japan as of our previous trip to Kyoto in 2010.

Upon our arrival, we had just gotten to the entrance when the owner poked her head out of a window on an upper floor and announced she would be right down. She greeted us SO warmly and we all sat down in the common room to take care of the payment. While we were in there she gave us a bevy of information packets and maps which were all very useful. We scheduled a calligraphy class for that day and I asked her what would be the best way to get there. She actually called the guy who ran the class and interpreted the directions for us!!! So nice!!!

The room itself was very nice; we had a slightly smaller room compared to our friends, but we were in the "Kiyomizu" room so I liked it just fine :) Nice tatami, super comfortable futon. The shared bathroom was very good; there was a western style and japanese style for both needs, and then a separate bath/shower area. Very spacious!

As far as location goes, last time we were in Kyoto we stayed in the northern/slightly western side near Kinkaku-ji. This time we really explored Gion and LOVED it! I have a wonderful friend who does tours who showed us around Gion, Yasaka Shrine, and the jaw dropping Kodai-ji. We were also close to the Philosophers Walk, where we checked out Kinkaku-ji and Nanzen-ji along the way. I highly recommend this side of town! The Arashiyama area (on the west side) is nice too, but if you want some shopping and nightlife mixed in with your traditional japanese experience, check out Gion, and stay at Hanakiya!

This hostel/inn/minshuku is a traditional Japanese home. We slept on the floor on futons on tatami floors. The inn is just down a flight of stairs where the tourist buses drop people off for Kiyomizu temple and five minutes walk to a city bus stop. Bathrooms are shared but there are enough to go around. The shower is delightful and big enough for two. The hot water just keeps coming. The hostess is friendly and has a lot of information in her small parlor for foreigners. Her English is very good and she enjoys talking to her guests. You can have your laundry done here for a small fee, and there's even a puppy. Delightful stay in delightful Kyoto.

Room Tip: Take what you get. They're all very nice.
